    It costs HOW much???

We have a second hand rosewood dining room suite - large table, 8 chairs and sideboard. It's OH's taste rather than mine, but I chose most things in the house and he really wanted this, when we bought it several years ago. We finally got round to redecorating the room last year when we had the Velux windows installed, but the tailored cushions on the chairs were still covered in horrible mustard colour Draylon, or something similar. So this week we finally got round to doing something about it. After a bit of asking and searching we found an upholsterer who does new seat cushions for chairs.

We decided we needed new foam innards as well as covers, so asked him for a quote.

    Seven hundred and sixty-odd pounds!!!!!

I thought OH was going to be overcome by the vapours and had my smelling salts at the ready!

When he regained control of his voice he croaked hoarsely "We could buy a new dining room suite for that" (It's certainly more than we paid for the one we've got!)

So now my dilemma is - did he mean we should get a new suite or was he just in a state of shock!

Well you could use it to your advantage , if you want a new one you could gently persuade him that in the long run he is right a new one would be cheaper

Hope OH meant you should get a new one.
        Would be cheaper.

When eldest bought his house 2½ years ago, he wanted a new table and chairs.
He looked on ebay, and saw a table and 6 chairs for £100.
It also came with a floor standing corner unit.
When he went to look at it,he snapped it up.
It was almost new and very good quality.

What were you going to have the seats covered with? I presume that included the fabric Daisy.

Reupholster is expensive don’t know why , we had 2 settees recovered a few years ago and it cost £1700 but the suite cost £2000 in its day , we also had a two 2 settees have loose covers put on by Plumbs and that was £1000 as you say it’s cheaper to buy new but your probably like us we loved the design of the furniture and wanted to keep it , the one with loose covers on is in the conservstory was yellow flowered thing but it’s faded so much now , if we don’t move I’m buying new,

Plant - at that price I would have wanted them covered in fabric made from spun gold!!! In fact we'd chosen a totally plain grey linen!

              Qwerty - I'm still gasping!

Oma - you're a girl after my own heart. But I need to bide my time for the right opportunity and I'm not so good at that!!!

Nana - I'll keep you posted.

Daisy have you ever thought of doing it yourself are you that way inclined a reall good staple gun would only cost you about £20 if that and you can get the foam cut to size from any caravan supply shop or local market

Glamm, thanks for the suggestion. If it had been reupholstering the actual seat of the chair, yes we could have done that easily, but these are loose cushion pads that need to be made up rather like a flat box, and shaped to go round the arms and back of the chairs.

                      I'll post a photo!

This is for the chairs with arms -

Imagine this with our black, white and raspberry pink colour scheme - they've got to go!!!

Daisy I can understand why they would be so expensive they are not your standard seat cushion are they , very complicated

Six of them are a bit simpler than this shape which is for the two carver chairs, but, yes I knew it would be expensive and was expecting about £500 - not nearly 50%more than that.

They are a very attractive shape Daisy and are not the usual fabric on one side. High Wycombe our nearest town was famous for it's furniture making, particularly the Windsor chair and there are quite a lot upholsterers around still. Errol and Parker Knoll still have workshops,.not sure if it would be cheaper here.
