Earlier this year the gas company informed me they were putting my gas monthly payment up from £48 to £56. As I am very frequently in major credit meaning that they have to refund me I told them not to. They said that they estimated that I would owe them am amount between £8 and £12 at the end of the quarter. My argument was that they a) should allow that to be carried over to the next bill as they don't mind hanging on to over £200 of my money at times and b) £8 a month for three months equals £24 which is double their estimated underpayment. They were not happy but agreed to keep the amount at £48 and would review at the end of the next quarter which is now.

Imagine my surprise therefore when I received a letter from them today saying that having reviewed my gas usage they are changing the payments from £48 to.............£37! Of course I am very pleased but I cannot understand how very different their estimates are. Still I don't care, more money left on my bank account.

Also we had a water meter put in a couple of years ago and saw our water bills reduce from £28 a month to £7 a month. The meter is outside underneath the pavement so they just come along and read it without having to bother us.

Our water metre is at the end of our drive the man comes with his little key thingy and reads it ,same as our Gas and Electric they are in boxes in the Alley way down side of house , we always know they have been as they never close the gate . We lucky we have a capped rate on our water because of Brian . Still not cheap and we keep an eye on how much we use we don't want to take advantage just because we get it a little cheaper ,

Our gas and electric is read with a smart meter so no one comes to the house and I then view it online, my water meter is outside on the pavement technology eh marvallous

We are on the list for smart meters but they haven't arrived in this area yet. I submit readings on line for gas and electric.

We have been thinking about a water meter, so would you say it is worth changing?

We had a water meter installed 2½ years ago, and the bills went down by half.We still use the water just as we did before, don't think twice about using water.

Absolutely. It is absurd that our water bill was the same as the people who were then living in the downstairs flat next door with a baby and a four year old. Or even now, my downstairs neighbour underneath has horses in a field with no running water and she fills this enormous 20 gallon drum every other day to take there for them. It is not right that everyone pays the same when there is so much disparity in usage.

When we first had the meter we were paying £28 per month and it is now reduced to £7. We do not use less water than we used to although we don't use the dishwasher much as there is only two of us so takes an age to actually fill.
