I think this is an American import which has become popular over here.
I gather the original idea was the Elf was checking for good behavior in the household up to Christmas.
We needed no such elf in my childhood home. I clearly remember my mum shouting up the chimney to the 'fairies' if I was misbehaving from November onwards!!
These elves are moved around the house each night by parents and sometimes do mischievous things (as if parents don't have enough to do at this time of year)
My GC have never had Elf on The Shelf. GS1 has 2 Kindness Elves . This involves a LOT of work for DD1 as not only do they move around the house, they leave tiny little notes, presents and suggestions for activities!
On Friday driving home from school GS2, ages 7, was tugging my heartstrings by telling me how very sad and left out he felt as all his friends had Elves and he couldn't join in conversations about the elves at school the next day! I told DD and she ordered him one. We both feel he has missed out quite a lot in recent months due to his sister needing mum's attention so much. I am very happy that he will get his elf, and interested to hear where he will go and what he will do
