I wish my Dog Could Tell the Time

I think it's a bit of cheek putting this under 'Poetry' as I'm sure any real poet would tear it apart, but a week on from Summer Time starting Eva is still looking for her dinner at 4.30. To her Summer Time is a load of nonsense, and she's actually convinced OH that it is time for her dinner an hour early!

I Wish my Dog could Tell the Time

    Come Autumn time
    There’s n’er a sign
That dinner comes before it should.
With nose aloft, she sniffs and seeks
    Delicious beef or lamb completes

    But, oh! the fuss
    When Spring’s light nights
    Bestow on us
An extra hour of bless’d daylight

The irate look, the pacing stance,
The hardest heart would have no chance.
The big brown eyes, the whiskers stiff
All clearly say ‘I’m in a miff.
My tummy says it’s time for food,
I have to say, I’m in a mood.”

    “It’s just four thirty, mid-afternoon,
You don’t get fed nowhere this soon.”

    Four-thirty doesn’t mean a dime
To a dog who cannot tell the time!!

“My body clock tells me it’s NOW,
My tummy rumbles are a sign.
I have no means to tell you how
    But feed me, feed me,
    Feed me NOW”

😆😆😆 Ah Yes, I remember it well! No dog now but a cat that thinks it’s feeding time every time she wakes up from a snooze, let alone the clocks changing!

Daisy, you do yourself down that is an excellent poem!!

As Grauntie says, cats feel the same way!

Grauntie - cats are a law unto themselves. They expect food when they want it, don't they!

Gem - thank you - you're very kind.

Lovely poem Daisy. At least you have a proper dog that actually WANTS food. As you will remember our little cavalier King Charles had to be coaxed to eat.

Sunshine - yes, I remember Buster not being very interested in food. But when he stayed with us he found out Druid would eat it if he left it, and it soon 'persuaded' him to gobble it up. He was a lovely, sweet doggy.

(For those not in the know, Druid was a lab/retriever cross whose main interest in life was food. He was born in a village near Stonehenge, hence the name!)

Daisy, Druid was such a handsome chap. John used to joke that Druid would eat Buster for breakfast, but he was always so gentle with him. Bless then both!

                Sunshine - I'd forgotten that!

Dolly Basset was most upset when the hour changed her feeding time so over the week we have fed her 15mins later every day until we got it right again,Poppy was not interested at all as she grazes all day Oliver the cat was waking J with one of his loud crys for food at 5pm but Ollie is hungry constantly he invites himself into Lynns house next door to see if anything better is on offer.
                  I love the poem. xx

Glamm, thank you! We've tried the 15 minute trick with Eva, but each time she's been asking for her dinner the full hour before it's due. Breakfast times can vary, depending on what time I get up, but once I am up, she expects instant breakfast service! Yet I wouldn't call her a greedy dog - I think she just likes the routine.

I think we've finally persuaded Eva that dinner will be served between 5.30 and 6.30. She still looks vaguely hopeful about 4.30 but a small treat seems to send the message that the main event will arrive later!
