Grandson reluctant to take the final step in toilet training!

GS is still refusing to poo in the potty or toilet.
DD put him back on pull-ups, as it is preferable to dirty underwear! He is 100% reliable in the peeing department, never has an accident.
He demands we all leave the room when he fills his pull-ups, stating 'I need my privacy'
We realise he has been allowed to rule the roost where this topic is concenred and it has to stop.
I can't make him use the potty or toilet but I can insist he gets his privacy in the toilet like everyone else, not by making others leave the living room!!
DD said she is going to grit her teeth and put him in ordinary pants again, when they can be at home for a couple of days and hopefully knock this on the head.
We saw OHs great nephew, who was 2 last month, perform on the loo with no problem. He is 14 months younger than my GS, so it shocked me somewhat!
I will report back when we have any progress!“A grandchild fills a space in your heart that you never knew was empty.” – Unknown

Gem - he will get there! But giving him his privacy in the loo sounds a better idea than the living room!! He's aware of what he's doing so I'm sure it will only be a short step to making it happen in the loo or on the potty.

Daisy , last week he told me that mummy was taking him to Home Bargains to choose a toy when he performs in the loo (not that he has managed it yet!) DD said she offered him The Disney Store, but he is much more taken with Home Bargains toys!“A grandchild fills a space in your heart that you never knew was empty.” – Unknown

When mine were very young one of their friends had a real issue with this. The consultant said it was one of the few areas where small children felt in control! As well as tummy ache he could have had a sore anus at some time which might be a reason for not trying. Mind reading would be a real help sometimes!xx

Gemini - if GS is now thinking about using the loo, what about making it a game. Something like when there's a splash noise (I don't want to get too graphic!) you ring a bell, or have a toy musical instrument you can sound - a drum, or something. He might be encouraged to make up a 'tune' - plip, plop, plipitty plop!!!

7 months on... things are no different. It is getting beyond a joke. Perfectly reliable in the wee department, almost always dry at night. He has control, he never has an accident, just asks for a pull up and 'privacy ' He wears pants all the time, but we have to change him into pullups for a poo. Then of course, you have to change it. It requires about a quarter of a pack of wipes each time
DD is heartily sick of it. He has the promise from his mum of a really good toy he is wanting once he performs on the toilet, and the promise from me of a smaller treat the first time he does it at my house. He really wants those treats, and says he will go on the toilet, but it is always 'not today'. We think she may have to bite the bullet and stop buying pullups.
He is 3 years and almost 8 months old. I would love to throw his old changing mat away! I bought a new one for his baby cousin, as he is still using his!“A grandchild fills a space in your heart that you never knew was empty.” – Unknown

Gem I was talking to DS at the weekend and we got onto this subject as Sophia has been dry and in pants for a long time now assumed all was well she was 3 in April but apparently not , she will only have a poo if she has pull ups on , D'S said she doesn't like being cleaned up but refuses to go to the toilet for a poo and he said if you try to get her on the potty she goes stiff and screams blue murder so it sounds like a common theme doesn't it , I told him not to make a fuss , also about what happened when he was the same, I do think biting the bullet and leaving the pull ups off may be the only wayIm not fat just 6ft too small

Iv'e never come across this problem before, but just done a bit of googling. Not sure if it will help, but might be worth a read.

I've not read the sites suggested by Nan2 so it may have come into one of those what I am about to say. My DD1 got her eldest to go by working on the end result. Once he did a poo he was able to flush the loo himself & wave saying "Bye bye ...you're off to Pooville now. Have a nice time". It worked a treat for him."Good friends help you to find important things when you have lost them....your smile, your hope, and your courage."
