I wanted to start savings for the children but parents already had that in hand. I used to buy comics every week and give sweeties but they were getting very expensive and Joe wasn’t that bothered. When he was about eight or nine I gave him and Ben the choice of magazines or money and that is when it changed. They do get a little bag of their favourite sweets which I give to parents for distribution when they see fit and Joe is very much into money for birthdays and Christmas (or “hard cash” as he calls it). I usually spend about fifty quid on them for birthdays but a lot of the time I use my Tesco or Sainsbury points. Same at Christmas. This year Joe wanted money and Ben wanted a voucher to buy computer games with. I always buy them an outfit each which I did last Christmas, Sadie specifically asked for a coat which was fifty quid, quite a lot for a little girl but better than buying something she wouldn’t want. Plus of course there are the Christmas Eve boxes.

At some point I am going to have to re-examine the pocket money issue because I don’t want to be paying them £35 quid when they are 35 years old!

Zizi, I have always had a policy about presents for young family friends, nephews and nieces, etc. They get birthday and Christmas presents until they are 21 or until they finish full-time education. I explain that now they are adults it will just be cards. I also tell their parents.

I think I will always want to give them birthday and Christmas presents but, you are right. 21 seems a good time to say I am not doing it anymore. As they get older I will think about it because, of course. We will be getting older and will probably not have the funds, if I don’t get a job it will be sooner rather than later.........

Not living near my GC I’ve never given them pocket money but I do leave them something when we’ve been on a visit or when they come to see us.

DD gives them money (I’m not sure how much ) but they do have to do a set number of specific chores to get it. For example GD has to unload dishwasher and hoover a set number of times each week and GS has to sweep the front porch etc.

I've now got another job the girls can do on Monday and Tuesday next week - our neighbours have gone skiing and I'm looking after their 3 cats for the week. I shall definitely need some help on those two days!

We've just got back from looking after the GSs for a couple of days. GS1 is a computer and electronics wiz and he's earned money from us at various times for helping OH with his computer. This week it was GS2 who 'earned' the money. He moved out of his bedroom onto a campbed so we could have his nice, new king-size bed. OH was ahead of me and left him an envelope with a thank you note and £10 saying how much we appreciated it.

We don't give pocket money and I now refuse to buy comics/magazines they are a ridiculous price nowadays. We pay into a savings account for all 4 each month and OH saves his £2 coins in a huge jar. Every other year the girls get to count them out, this year they were thrilled to get £86 each to go in their savings.Plus I am always buying them bits and pieces throughout the year.
