    Earning money

    Seven year old GD1 is saving up. She doesn't know what for, but her target is £20, and she has around £15 at the moment.

    I've promised I'll give her some jobs to do next Monday and Tuesday when she's with me for half-term. One job will be to go through my box of colouring pencils and sharpen them. She likes folding washing, so I'll make sure there are a couple of loads just waiting for her.

    So what do you all think the 'going rate' is, and what else can I ask her to do. I can't just 'make up' jobs - she wouldn't like that, and she is very sensible and careful. Any ideas welcome.

    I think 50p sounds reasonable for the pencil sharpening, not sure about the washing.

      Filling up the bird feeders.
      Tidying the toys.
      Hoovering/sweeping (my 6+ GS loves it)
      Sorting the Grand children's books... any to take to Charity?

      Would any of these interest her I wonder? Sorry Daisy but I don't have a clue about the 'going rate'. I don't suppose 'bob a job' exists anymore.😂

        When you take into consideration how much the tooth fairy leaves theses days I suppose 50p for a small job and £1 for a big one. Just guessing.

          I know my DD pays GS1 for 'jobs' as he is always wanting money (but unlike your GD Daisy he always knows what he wants! He's only 5, but seems to want a lot of things!) I will ask what his rate of pay is

          I give my GD pocket money. It started age 7 at 10p for each year of age, so now she gets 80p a week. Not a great deal, but it was the first money of her own she had ever had and she was so excited when I told her I was going to do this!

            Gem, I can imagine how excited GD was about her pocket money. I think it’s very good for children to take some responsibility for their own money.

            Thanks everone one for suggestions. I bet both GDs will like filling the bird feeders. 😉 I think GD1 will enjoy sorting the Mr Men books into order. She could also sort out the baby toys for the charity shop. Any other ideas most welcome. 👍😀

              Some good ideas there Daisy, for jobs for her to do.
              Not sure what the going rate is, sorry.
              Sometimes I forget to like posts,but that doesn't mean I don't like them.

                Sweeping the stairs down with a hard brush, assuming you have stairs and they are carpeted! I used to quite like doing that! Emptying waste paper baskets. Do you have any brass or silver to polish? I used to do that for an elderly lady - I think I earned 2/- but there were quite a lot of ornaments and I hated the feeling of the silver polish when it dried on my hands.

                    Shem - sweeping the stairs is a good idea - they're always covered in dog hairs!

                    Silver clenaing is a good idea as well - Ii've got one of those zinc plates you put soda crystals on and she would enjoy doing my silver jewellery and perhaps the cutlery.

                    GM - OH is good about sweeping up, but it's given me the idea that she could help with polishing some of his work in progress!!

                    She could end up being quite rich!

                      Gem I give mine pocket money once a month, a pound for each year of age so it currently costs me £35 per month. They are all good at saving which is a good thing but the parents do buy them everything even outside of birthdays like Ben’s laptop was playi up so they bought him a new one, Sadie. Rome her tablet so they bought her a new one. I don’t remember doing that whe. Mine were little. In fact I don’t actually re e ver getting pocket money when I was a child either!

                        If I gave mine all that they would earn more than I do Zizi

                        Right now I only pay 80p a week in total, as I didn't start it until GD was 7, so the boys are not yet eligible
                        Once GD reaches 10 and has one pound a week, I will have to rethink my strategy, as 10p a year increase isn't much at that age. I haven't thought it all through yet however. I have about a year and a half until she is 10 anyway.

                          I hadnt t thought about pocket money Gem to be honest, we pay into an ISA each month for each of them for me at the moment it’s enough 😀
                          They get treats from us regularly whenever I go past Lush there is always a bath bomb for each of them, comics, chocolates etc

                            We never gave our GC pocket money but OH invested some money each which they received when they were 18. I give the ones who are not earning, 3 students, some money when I think they need it. They really appreciate it.

                              Plant, I’m sure your student GCs must really appreciate that. We don’t give pocket money, but we do give them very generous presents for birthdays and Christmas, including money.

                              We also pay for jobs. But it’s hard to devrlep a sensible pricing policy, 😀
