Our last mattress was the over heating tempura which could get uncomfortable in the summer. The one we have now has the cool technology which is much better. I don’t think these mattresses last as long as the older types. The foam on the last one felt quite lumpy - a bit like sitting on pebbles.

Ours is the 'no turn' kind as well, but we swap top to bottom occasionally. We have a large drawer underneath which pulls out at the end of the bed, rather than the sides. We use it as a huge shoe box - half each!
Shem - did you find out why it was lumpy?"Joy is what happens to us when we allow ourselves to recognise how good things really are. "

Shem - what a good idea! You don't really know if a mattress is right until you've slept on it a few nights. Before we got our memory foam mattress we made an expensive mistake - I just couldn't sleep on the lovely new mattress we'd bought, and I was in agony with back ache from it. I tried and tried, but it just wasn't working for me. We ended up putting it in the guest room - and every one makes a point of saying how comfortable it is - and got the memory foam one."Joy is what happens to us when we allow ourselves to recognise how good things really are. We didn’t have the first memory foam mattress very long because of the overheating issues. The lumpiness is from where I sit in bed and read and I ‘ve only noticed over the last 5/6 months. Will check tomorrow when we bought the mattress.
I think the ikea offer is very good. Gives you time to get used to a different matress and to put things right if you've made a mistake. We have drawers under the main bed and the spare room one lifts up and provides loads more storage though not quite so easy to access items you want.

We’d seen that when we last went to Ikea, will keep it in mind. Just had a look on their site and if you pay to have it delivered they will collect and deliver another one, so that’s good. We had a quick look around yesterday and it’s a minefield, so many different types, we gave up in the end."Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened." - Dr Seuss

Not too sure about that Plant. The one on our bed cost a small fortune and we’ve never felt totally happy with it. The one on the spare bed was much cheaper and to be honest much more comfortable. I’ve slept on it since DH is getting up so much in the night and I’ve slept better than I have for years. Just changed the bedding and had a good look at it, it’s sprung but with a memory foam topping, I hadn’t realised that, it’s so comfy. Our visitors have always said they sleep well but I’m glad I’ve tried it for myself. So if we get another one for the other bed I think we’ll try and get similar."Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened." - Dr Seuss

I agree Plant. We have had ours a few years now, and it is still very comfortable. It was a very expensive one, with a good discount in a sale.

I did read somewhere that you should test the mattress by laying on it for at least 10 minutes but most people just prod it which doesn’t really tell you very much. You should be able to slip your hand behind your back whilst laying on your back. Even with cheaper ranges it’s an expensive mistake if it doesn’t work out.xx

You do feel a bit silly though, when you lie on a mattress in the shop and your OH drops off to sleep and starts snoring!!!! LOL
In case you're wondering - my OH hasn't done that yet, but he's pretended to!"Joy is what happens to us when we allow ourselves to recognise how good things really are. "

Well, after weeks of waiting, we've finally got our new mattress. Against my better judgment we got a Emma mattress online. It's a combination of pocket springs and memory foam with 'cool technology' - whatever that is! It was delivered in a box on Friday, but with being out on Saturday we didn't unwrap it until yesterday. We had to leave it for a few hours to plump up from being rolled up.
After one night OH has woken, refreshed and ready to face the day. I am aching all over! I woke up at least 6 times. It feels a bit too hard for me - I usually sleep on my side and my hips feel sore and bruised. But it's one night, and we'll see how it goes. We can return it within 100 days if we don't like it, so we'll have to wait and see.
It should have been delivered within 3-4 weeks but has taken more like 7. We'd emailed a couple of times asking what was happeneing. They were very apologetic and gave us an extra £45 off it, so if you were thinking of buying from Emma - the 3-4 weeks it still says on their website is wrong.
It looks well-made and has zip off covers for washing, although we've also put a cotton mattress protector on.
Enfys - have you got your new one yet?
