I think I am with Q on this. Nice hotel for me. Don’t think husband would want to do a boating holiday. He got sea sick on an Isle of Wight ferry some years ago, the sea was smooth and the sun was shining. So embarrassing.....

You could do the French waterways, at least you will feel you have been abroad

The boating holiday seems to be on hold, as the friends who suggested it have stopped mentioning it.
They are a lot better off than we are, and still working. They go on lots of holidays and breaks throughout the year, and perhaps feel they can't fit another in this year!
They are good friends, but can be 'flaky', in that a lot of the things they suggest come to nothing.

Gem - that's a pity in a way, although I know you were uncertain. Perhaps the friends have run out of holiday allowance, but it would be nice if they said something.

I was uncertain Daisy, but wanted to go for OH's sake as she is so keen.

Awww, Gem, that's very nice of you. And you might find you like it, too.

Could you ask the friends if they're still thinking about it or have gone off the idea?

Think I'd be tempted to let the idea lie now Gem! Maybe they picked up on the fact that you weren't very keen and decided not to bother.

Never been on a canal boating holiday, I have watched many programmes on TV and it looks wonderful but it also looks like hard work, navigating all those canal locks ! I have been on a one day trip on a canal barge but that's hardly the same thing

I think I would find a lot of locks a bit frustrating, especially if they were all 'against' you. We deliberately chose where we went to minimise locks and there were just enough to keep the boys interested in operating them but not so many that they got fed up. At one point we had to divert because the water levels were too high to get under some low bridges, so you have to be prepared to be a bit flexible about your destination. We also made good use of riverside pubs so we didn't have to cook much. It was the sort of holiday you look back on and wonder why you didn't do it more often.

But having the caravan has got similarities. The freedom to choose where you're going, no particular plans and time to do nothing at all except laze around. There's a similar level of home comforts, although I think the van is better, and having a spotless shower block with endless hot water is lovely. In fact it's time we booked our first trip of this season!!!

Mimi, OH and one of the 2 friends are really keen on navigating locks! OH is the more practical however, so would end up doing the most. The other friend and I see ourselves more as sitting on deck with tea or prossecco

Get booking the next caravan trip Daisy!

Gem, I don't think it will be until mid-May - we've got several commitments over the next few weeks that would be hard to avoid.
