    Short break in Stratford

I went to Stratford on Avon for the first time last autumn, and loved it. We have friends there and stayed with them for a few days.

We are going again for 2 nights with 2 friends, 2 of my oldest friends. Staying at the good old Premier Inn. We will meet up with the friends who live there for a meal, visit Warwick castle, which we didn't have time to do last time, and generally enjoy Stratford. The forecast isn't too good, but never mind!

Enjoy your trip to Stratford Gem. It must be over 40 years ago since I last visited Stratford. (God, that makes me feel so old)
I hope the weather is fine for you, it's not looking particularly promising for my trip this weekend either.
Bring me sunshine in your smile.

I'm trying to ignore the general weather forecasts for the week-end. My OH is booked in for his much-delayed Spitfire flight on Saturday morning, at the Imperial Air Museum. This will be the third attempt and he will be so disappointed if it's rained off again.

Fingers crossed the rain holds off, Daisy. Hope he has a great flight, what an experience.

Stratford is a really lovely place. We've been there a few times since moving here. Warwick castle was voted best castle by both grandsons as there is so much to do and see.

My Dad used to mend spitfires during WW2. He joined up early hoping to be a pilot but, as he had already completed an engineering apprenticeship, the RAF had other ideas. Probably just as well given the survival rates of the pilots. Such brave young men. Hope the weather is kind this time around Daisy.

Shem - I can imagine how much your Dad would have liked to fly Spitfires, but the work he did saved many young lives. OH says it's an incredible plane to fly - very responsive and light to handle. The engineering in them must have been way ahead of its time. It was a pity Reginald Mitchell (the designer) didn't live long enough to see how important they were to the country.

We had a great time in Stratford, and as with all good things, it went too quickly!

It wasn't without incident. We went on the backstage tour at the RSC (which strangely made me so nostalgic for that work, although it is 40 years since I did it!) and part way though there was a fire alarm! This was due to a smoke effect coming though holes in the stage during the tech rehearsal for A Midsummer Nights Dream. We all had to leave the theatre and hang about for ages until it was officially pronounced there was no fire!

We had lots of rain, and on our second night we were eating in a pub restaurant when there was downpour . The staff starting putting sandbags around the door, and then there was a power cut! The lights did come back on but not the card machine. Luckily we had enough cash between us to pay!

On Monday we went to Warwick Castle, and had a very good day. We went on the ramparts and up the tower. I was OK about the ramparts, but didn't want to go up the tower. I didn't realise that you have to go up there, as it is a one way system and it's not possible to bypass it. It was a dark, narrow, stone spiral staircase. My friend C isn't keen on heights, so was nervous up there. I think I caught her nervousness. That combined with being encased in the dark, going round and round, with nothing to see above and below me, and having done lots of climbing, made me feel awful, really scared. I began to worry about passing out or having a panic attack and no one being able to help me, or get past me! I have never had a panic attack, but have heard enough about them to know how awful they are. I told myself I was just panicking about having a panic attack! I told OH I was scared, and she kept looking ahead so she could tell me when there was some light so we were nearing the top. I was so relieved to get out! I was OK going downwards, but my friend was even more scared of that part. I won't be repeating this part of the trip!

We got wet a lot on this trip, but we had fun and laughs, and Stratford, as ever is a lovely place

Gem - you certainly had your fair share of adventures. It's funny how even 40 years later you can feel nostalgia like that. Thank goodness you held it all together in the tower - it must have been scary. I think I'd be ore worried about going down than up like your friend.
