    Thanks for the link to that article, Gem. It makes very interesting reading, and raises the question "what is a safe airline?"


    “In our rating system, which is endorsed by aviation’s governing body the International Civil Aviation Organisation, if deaths occurred through acts of terrorism, high jacking or pilot suicide, they are not included in the crash record," he said.

    I'm sure that's a great consolation to the relatives and friends of the two Malaysian Airlines planes which crashed in the last year or so and the Lufthansa flight where the pilot flew the plane into a mountain to commit suicide. In any case, a lack of fatalities only accounts for one of the seven-star ratings! I would be much happier if it accounted for all 7 possible stars. I'm sure this sounds cynical, but to me it's common sense that there is only one important feature of a safe airline and that is that it delivers all its passengers and crew back to earth safely.
