    Our Canada trip 2025

    Part 1 - getting there!

We booked this holiday over a year ago so we have been waiting a long time.

Finally it arrived. As the holiday we wanted only flew from Heathrow we had to get ourselves down there. OH wasn't keen to drive and I don't blame her at all.

We booked first class on the train down for a bit more room and our meal. We travelled on Friday late afternoon so we could eat our meal on the way down. Not only did it save us money as it's included in the ticket price it meant we didn't have to look for a meal once we arrived.

DD1 arrived in very good time to drive us to the station for our 5pm train. Unknown to any of us one of the major roads was closed so we had to take a massive detour . We did actually arrive in time for our train. Which was then half an hour late! Worse than that was the last minute platform change to one back over the platform

Apart from that the train journey was fine and the meal very nice. The tube journey from Kings Cross to Heathrow which I had been dreading was actually ok. The train being a bit late could have actually helped a bit with the room on the underground train. It was over an hours journey in an extremely hot carriage though so we were like limp rags when we arrived.
We easily found the Hoppa bus which serves all the hotels and that was a short ride to our hotel. I did all my check in on a screen only to be told there were no rooms We than queued to see an actual person who sorted it out easily.
Hot and tired we showered and soon went to bed.

On Saturday morning we had booked a private transfer for the short ride back to the terminal. We booked this for 7am and a lovely friendly lady was waiting in reception and got us to the airport in no time.
I had been dreading Heathrow but in fact we couldn't fault the efficiency. Everything ran smoothly and we were through in no time and sitting enjoying a leisurely breakfast. A much better experience than Manchester which can be hell on earth!

Our flight was delayed by about half an hour ( like the train!) It was fine though and we were coincidentally seated next to two ladies going on the same holiday as us.
Our holiday person was waiting for us in arrivals and all seemed to be going well. Except that two passengers didn't appear and we all had to wait for an hour for them. They never appeared so we don't know why.
We were then told our actual tour guide wasn't in Canada yet! Her flight the previous evening was cancelled and she was flying in that day but arriving after us.
We were taken to the hotel, checked in and had a rest.
We then went down and had something to eat. Our tour guide had arrived by then and put notes through everyone's doors. So at least we now know what we are doing tomorrow.
Our cases need to be outside our room by 8 and we meet our guide at 9. A tour of Calgary is on the itinerary then on to Banff where we will be based for 3 nights .

I will post about our holiday as time goes on.....

Gem, thank you for starting this thread - I was hoping you would, but don't want you taking time out of your special holiday. It's often the things we worry about that turn out to be no problem at all, like flying from Heathrow and the tube from Kings Cross.

I'm sure Calgary will be fascinating and looking forward to hearing about it if you have time. I hope you're having a lovely pancake breakfast with lots of maple syrup.

Gem, that's a good idea. You want to spend every minute of your holiday absorbing everything you're seeing and doing. I look forward to Parts 2, 3 and 4 when you're back home. xxx

                    Part 2 -Calgary and Banff

On Sunday morning we had breakfast at the hotel then met our tour guide, Caroline and got onto our coach for a tour of Calgary, which was very interesting. We got off a couple of times to see things.
We went t0 the site of the Calgary Stampede. Something we would have never heard of if one of OH's golf friends wasn't coming to Canada specifically for this event in a couple of weeks time!
                    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calgary_Stampede.
We also visited the Olympic park where Eddie the Eagle competed.

We then travelled to Banff, climbing to a great height.
Banff is a lovely place. It reminded me of Stratford on Avon in some ways.

We visited Lake Louise and Peyto Lake. Both beautiful and amazing in their different ways. The scenery at Lake Louise (named after Queen Victoria's daughter) is terrific but it is the freshness and scent of the air which is truly wonderful. You can feel it must be doing you good!
Peyto Lake is the most amazing colour, it's turquoise. I have some photos but they in no way do it justice.

We had a trip to the Icefields Parkway and boarded a snow coach. This took us to a glacier where tourists can walk, on specific areas. I didn't plan to walk just watch and take photos from the bus. However it looked OK so I followed OH onto the ice and it was fine. We enjoyed it but we both said afterwards it wasn't something we would have bothered to do were it not part of the holiday. An experience to have anyway!

We then had a free day in Banff. We spent some of it in a Doctors office, which I have spoken about on YEO.
We did have nice lunch out in the sunshine in the square, a swim in the hotel pool, and went out for a meal that evening.

Caroline our tour guide was from Yorkshire. She was friendly and I had many chats with her. She looked after us all well.
We were seated next to two ladies, friends, from Tamworth on the flight over. By the time we arrived we were friends. The lady I sat next to was also a Grandma so we have a lot in common
We enjoyed spending time with them on this holiday and we were together on the flight home too.

Gem, it's surprising what you learn when you visit somewhere new. I hadn't heard of Peyto Lake, but I'd certainly like to see it. I had heard of the Calgary Stampede, but had no idea it was still held. It will be interesting to know what OH's golf friend thinks of the event. What a pity you can't bottle that lovely mountain air and bring it back with you.

A really good tour guide makes a big difference to a busy schedule like yours. It would be impossible to see so much on your own.

Part 3 - The Rocky Mountaineer

An early start on the coach down the road to the Rocky Mountaineer station.
Our new friends had chosen the Gold upgrade so were in different carriage and stayed in a different hotel to us the night between, so we didn't see them again until Vancouver.

The train was a really good experience. We travelled on The First Passage to the West. We travelled 300 miles, over two days, descending from high in the snow capped mountains to the Vancouver coast.
The days were very long, averaging 12 hours each day. At the end of the first day we arrived at Kamloops for an overnight stay. The hotel was basic but fine. We merely showered, slept, got up and set off for the train again the next morning!
Up early the next day and back on the train for the final leg to Vancouver.
The views were so scenic and beautiful , with wildlife to look out for. The train spacious and comfortable and the food, drink and commentary and service were perfect.

They were long days and it was lot of sitting , but overall we all thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
We were warned about Train Legs, by both Caroline and the train stewards. I experienced it both nights and it is weird! You feel you are still on the train for some hours afterwards
There was a little Chinese looking lady whose job it was to clean the train toilets, two to each carriage. She spent the whole journey going very cheerfully from carriage to carriage cleaning and polishing

At the end of the second day we arrived in Vancouver and were transported to our hotel for the next two nights.
OH and I ate in the hotel restaurant before settling down for the night. Everyone was looking forward to a slightly later start the following morning

Gem, I love the idea of such an epic train journey through spectacular scenery, and I'm so glad you enjoyed your trip. But sometimes it's the unexpected/ordinary things you remember - rather like your lady polishing and cleaning all the time.

My mother went on the Rockies trip for the Fall colours, and I remember how wonderful it was. It was something she always remembered as the experience of her life.
