    August Holiday

We're determined to get as many breaks in the caravan as possible this year.

We've just booked a week at Burnham-on-Sea (north Somerset) in August and are taking both GDs with us. We're so excited, and I think they are as well! Eva will go and stay with their Mum and Dad and Cooper, so she will be happy, too.

I just hope the weather is kind to us, although we have several things planned that aren't too weather-dependent.

Your GD’s will love holidaying in a caravan I think Daisy, we took two of our GS’s. My son preferred to sleep in the awning.

Thanks, yes I think it's our turn for some good holiday weather, and GD2 will be more than happy on the beach. She's already said "we" are going to build the biggest sandcastle in the world. They only live a mile from the beach but it's shingle - ok for a reenactment of the Great Wall of China, but not great for sandcastles.

Both girls are happy to sleep in the awning. We can shut one end off to make a little bedroom for them which they like the sound of.

Well, if the current weather trends continue, I think we might need wellies more than sun cream. I'm currently trying to make sure we've got plenty of non-gadget things to do if we are stuck inside because of the weather.

Any suggestions would be welcome - they are almost 13 and 91/2. I'm not keen to take paints because getting pictures to dry will be difficult. GD1 is very into her crocheting, but GD2 loves baking - not ideal in the confines of the caravan though.

Perhaps the girls could make use of those colouring books that seem to be popular. How about a small jigsaw on a tray or air drying modelling clay.
Is there a cinema nearby? There are always child friendly films on in the holidays.
Lets hope you’ll be able to get out and about.

Colouring and felt tips as Clover says. Older children often like the Mandala type ones. My GS2 quite enjoys those foil scratch pictures.

                  Card games and board games?

Maybe some 'easy' cooking such as those Jus Roll products? The cinnamon roll one are quite good and will give GD2 a bit to do. Unwrapping the cardboard tube is fun, then you need to cut the dough into six slices and arrange them on the baking tray. Icing sugar is supplied so that needs mixing and drizzling on when they are cool. Then you can all enjoy eating them

I hope you have lovely weather so you can get out and about though!

Lovely suggestions. Thank you Enfys and Gem. I had a chat with their Dad today to see what board games they have, plus some we have. They both play chess but I don't! They have got a Junior/Adult Trivial Pursuit, and we've got Junior Scrabble.

Clover - the air dry modelling clay is a great idea - they'd love that. Yes, I'll pack colouring books and various pens. I'm really hoping none of them will be needed and we'll be out and about or on the beach, but you need to be prepared, don't you.

What about junior Puzzle book/ cross word.
My GD loves to get my Puzzle book when she’s here and try the puzzles so I bought a junior one for when she comes ,it was a great hit .
keeps them occupied for ages .

Oma, that's a good idea, too. GD1 often does one of my crosswords or other puzzles. I'll get GD2 some junior ones, and some new grown up ones for GD1.

We've borrowed camp beds from DS1 and will get a couple of storage boxes to fit underneath so they've got somewhere dry to keep their things.

Our week away has been and gone! The weather was mostly kind to us. We had one morning in the caravan playing Trivial Pursuit. First we played in teams - and Team Grand-daughters won, then we played individually and GD2 won. OH and I were glad the rain stopped to avoid further crushing defeats.

We had a day out at Cheddar Gorge and visited Gough's Caves, a trip on the West Somerset steam train to Watchet, a day out in Weston-super-Mare plus trips to Berrow beach and Burnham beach. We found a good playground nearby which both girls enjoyed, and we were able to fly the borrowed kite on Burnham beach - even though it was pouring with rain just then.

We mostly ate out, and had so many meals that came with chips that both OH and I dreaded getting on the scales yesterday morning. Amazingly, we were both the same weight as before the holiday!

Both GDs liked sleeping in the awning, apart from one evening when the rain was so loud they couldn't sleep. Even when it had stopped GD2 was a bit worried about sleeping out there so she and I swapped places for the night. It was the first time she had been away from home, apart from sleepovers, but she was very relaxed and as always very funny.

One day over breakfast we were talking about a small ants' nest nearby. GD2 declared she wasn't worried about ants getting into the awning and anyway her toes were too majestic to be eaten by ants.

When I asked GD1 what her favourite part of the holiday was she replied "all of it - it's awesome".

At the end of the week we exchanged two tired girls with wet shoes and socks (heavy dew on the grass!) for Eva, who had also had a grand time with Cooper.

OH and I have both said we'll definitely take them away again - it was fun seeing the holiday through their eyes and we had the best time with lots of laughs.

A week's holiday flies by doesn't it Daisy?!

It sounds a wonderful holiday! Your GDs sound delightful.

                              They will always remember this.
My parents took DDs 1and 2 to the Isle of Man for a week when they were 7 and 9. They still remember it clearly and fondly.
