A Day out at the NEC

We thought it would be interesting to visit the Caravan and Motorhome Show this year - back at the NEC in Birmingham after the pandemic.

Birmingham is about 2 ½ hour drive from home, so we set off at 7.30, thinking we'd stop for breakfast somewhere and hopefully get there about 10.30. We eventually arrived at 12.30 after a 5 hour journey. The last 8 miles up the M42 took 21/2 hours, and when we finally got to the NEC the roads and car parks in the NEC itself were in chaos. I've been to the NEC many times over the years for all sorts of events, but never seen anything like this before!

Anyway, we decided it wouldn't spoil our day, even though it had cut it short! Our caravan is 20 years old, well-built and in good condition apart from things like the upholstery looking a bit dated and tired. Did we want to change it for a new one? We really didn't know.

We looked at all sorts of layouts, sizes and makes and they look fantastic, very sleek and modern - they all had things like built-in microwaves, combined gas and electric cookers, but as we tried various fittings - knobs, opening blinds etc - things were almost coming away in our hands. Eeek.

We've decided to keep our trusty home on wheels for now and perhaps treat it to some new upholstery!

Daisy, the son of my friend is on a stand there, I think Fiat motor homes. You do right to keep your trusty caravan! Then 5 hours to get there!!!!!

Daisy, I think you have made the right decision, unless you can find a sturdy newer version to suit you.

You've made a wide decision i think Daisy. Yours was probably built to last.

          New isn’t always best Daisy
Stick with what you know .
Fresh upholstery and new soft furnishings will be the best option x

              Sometimes older is better Daisy!

What a journey to get there.

I think Clover has hit the nail right on the head!

As Plant has suggested we might look to see if a second-hand, newer version of ours is worth having, but we are leaning towards keeping the rig we have for now.

Lizzie - the Motor home stands were very busy! We've noticed that there are often more motor homes on a camp site than traditional caravans, so they must tick a lot of boxes for people, We did look briefly at the Fiat stand as they do some really nice motorhomes, but a caravan works best for us, and is much cheaper as well. I hope your friend's son has a successful few days there.
