    Shibden Hall

Those of you who followed the TV series Gentleman Jack, will recognise this name!
I am reading the book Gentleman Jack at the moment, taken from Anne Lister's dairies, so the name is very familiar with me just now.
OH, 2 friends and I are going there soon. It sounds a lovely place to visit, I will report back. As we are going on a Sunday we have booked a table for lunch at the nearby Shibden Arms.

Have anyone else been to Shibden Hall?

Set in the picturesque Shibden valley, a mile from Halifax, Shibden Hall dates back to 1420 and offers visitors a fascinating journey through the lives of the people who lived and worked here.

It sounds lovely, Gem, and always interesting to see these locations 'in the flesh'.

I’ve downloaded the book but haven’t started it yet. The reviews made it sound fascinating, did you visit the church where the plaque in her memory is?

Sum1, do you mean the church in York where Anne and Ann Walker had their sacrament, which they saw as a marriage?
if so no. I know the church, but haven't been into York since I read the book so discovered which church it was. I intend to go, and photograph the plaque.

Shibden Hall is a lovely place to visit. The house and the grounds. We could easily have spent more time there. As one of the guides who are about the house said, it has a warm and welcoming feel and you can imagine living there as it is not too immense.
Anne Lister made many changes , extensions and improvements during her time there.
She was slightly pretentious it seems! She had a tunnel made so servants could move about without being seen and had a tower built. I think there would have been further towers had she lived longer. She had many plans. Apparently she seriously considered changing the name from Shibden Hall to Shibden Castle. Her friends laughed at her and talked her out of it!

Several of the rooms in the house were used for the filming of the Gentleman Jack series. Anne Lister's bedroom was too small however, so a replica set was built in the studios in Leeds and used to film those scenes. Aunt Anne's bedroom was filmed in.
There is a little train which takes you on a nice scenic tour around part of the grounds, and saves the walk up the hill!
After coffee and scones we took that train. We walked slowly back to the car park at the end of our visit, rather than take the train again.
We asked if visitor numbers had gone up since the TV programmes. They said they had, immensely so. They expected them to rise, but on nowhere near the scale which they have. One of our friends wanted to buy the Gentleman Jack book which I have read on my Kindle. There were none. The lady in the gift shop said that as soon as stock comes in the books fly off she shelves!
A very nice day, completed by a 4pm Sunday lunch at nearby Shibden Mill. For any Emmerdale viewers, whist having drink outside waiting for our inside table to be ready, at the next table was Bear! (Paddy's daft dad)
To round things off we went for ice cream before heading back. One of our friends hails from Huddersfield. She took us to a lovely and very cheap ice cream place, for our dessert!

All this, fine weather, and being driven in an open topped car, a good day was had by all.

Sounds lovely Gemini, pity my trip to your area didn't include Shibden Hall.
