    A couple of days away

OH and I managed to grab a couple of days much needed (especially by me) break, without spending too much cash!

I booked us into the Premier Inn on Euston Road. There are 2 within 5 minutes walk of Kings Cross, on the Euston Road, and we always stay in whichever has the best price for the dates. We walk there from the station, not need to negotiate the tube escalators with cases. On the last day we leave our cases there after checkout, and just pick them up on our way to back Kings Cross
Sunday nights are always cheapest so we went Sunday to Monday..
We book our train tickets 12 weeks in advance to get cheaper fares, and got further reductions with our senior railcards.
We visited the Tower Bridge experience, and London Zoo, both using the 2 for 1 offers with Days Out, you just need to download a voucher and show your train ticket.
We had enough credit on our Oyster cards for the first day and just topped them up a little to cover day two, and some left for our next visit.
After checking in and having a cuppa in our room we set off for the tube to Tower Hill. We then walked to Tower Bridge.
The Tower Bridge Experience was very interesting. You get to go right up there and walk across glass floors on each of the walkways. We saw the bridge opening from up there too, which was good.
With aching back and feet (me) we ate close the our hotel that night, and were tucked up in our comfy Premier Inn bed with books by 10 pm!
The next morning we checked out and left our cases in the care of the hotel. We then caught the tube to Camden town where we had breakfast, then walked to the zoo.
We had a good day there, and although my back and feet ached by the end, my knee was OK, as there were not so many steps as the previous day.
We enjoyed the zoo, but did feel that as we live fairly close to a wonderful wildlife park that it didn't compare favourably really. It was something we both wanted to do though as we hadn't been since we were young.
The weather was lovely both days, and we often took our jackets off. It was good to be out for the 2 days.
We were on the 18 minutes past 6 train home, due in to York at 8.15. There was a slight delay and we arrived about 25 past. This meant we missed the 8.20 bus from outside the station, which we had hoped we may just catch. Buses are every 30 minutes at night. The 10 to 9 bus didn't arrive. Eventually we caught a different bus which goes to our village but a longer route to get there and the bus stop not as near to our house. We were cold and just wanted to be on a bus though. It was 10 to 10 when we eventually got home, which wasn't the best end to the weekend. Public transport
We were very glad to be home

Gem - as Clover said, you packed a lot in to your short break, but I'm sure it did you the world of good. Your good planning made it affordable too - what a pity the bus service and the train being a few minutes late.

It sounds as though the bus needs to be timed for 8.25 to give people chance to get off the London train and get on the bus.

I hope you're having an easy day today and your back and feet are ok.
