    Where shall we go?

As most of you know, we have a touring caravan and so far have only done relatively short trips, partly to gain towing experience and partly because of commitments with GCs. This year we have lost out a bit for various reasons, and I'm disappointed we haven't used it more.

For next year I think we need to plan ahead for some longer trips in the UK. Although we've moved around the country quite a bit, there are whole areas I've never visited, and it's time to put that right!

So I'm asking for help - ideas and suggestions for interesting/beautiful places to visit. Where are your favourite haunts in the UK, please?

Daisy, depending on how far you want to travel, Lake District is lovely
We also like Howarth, otherwise known as Bronte Country.
Don't know if you have been to either of these places.

Nanto and Qwerty. Thank you both. I don't know the Lakes very well, so that sounds like a great idea. I have never actually been to Yorkshire, but I've read quite a bit about the North Yorkshire moors and that sounds fantastic. I have friends in the York area (you may know one of them!!!) so that would be great, too.

We've been as far north as Inverness, Qwerty, and many years ago camped at the foot of Ben Nevis, but I would love to return. As you say, it's a long way for you, let alone us, but if we can get two or three weeks together it's doable. We'd stop off at a couple of places to break the journey.

Nanto - If we're travelling a very long distance we'd try to take in other places on the way, which is partly why I'm asking for ideas. We could easily sail past the most beautiful places in the country without realising what we were missing.

Lots to do in York and Yorkshire
Northumberland is one of my favourites. Beautiful beaches, lots of castles etc, including Alnwick Castle, which was used to film exterior Hogwarts shots in the Harry Potter films.

What about our neck of the woods, the Gower peninsular and South Wales generally?. The Pembrokeshire coast is also beautiful.

Clover, we always say we should visit Wales again.
Last time we were there was just before we got married in 1968,
We stayed in Haverfordwest. Not sure if thats near you or not.

All good suggestions Daisy. One holiday we had in our touring van was up to the lakes then across to Yorkshire Dales (love them) and on to the Moors and Whitby. As Clover says, you would love Wales. You really should plan it early next year and get it on the calendar. there are some good Caravan Sites in those areas.

Don't forget the East Anglian Fens;Constable Country;Aldeburgh and Snape Maltings ( if you're musically inclined!) ; Cambridge for a bit of culture and punting on The Cam. Huge skies and plenty to see!

These are all my favorite places, too.
But you must visit the Norfolk Broards at some point. It was only this years visit where I understood the saying "Huge Skies"
Helmswell in Yorkshire, well anywhere in Yorkshire.
The Northumberland coast is beautiful. That would be a lovely way to travel up to Scotland.
                    The Cotswolds too.

What a lot of brilliant suggestions, everyone. Many thanks.

We've caravanned in South Wales, near St Davids, and have promised ourselves we will go back there - Clover will wake up one morning to find us in her front garden! It's not too far for us. North Wales is 'home' for OH.

WeeGranny - I'm ashamed to say that even though we have lived in Bedfordshire we've never been to the Fens. We had a canal/river holiday on the Ouse and the Cam, but didn't visit Cambridge. I'd love to go to the Aldeburgh area, and also up to North Norfolk. Jules - the huge skies would be a big attraction.

I hadn't really thought of Northumberland, even though I know it's a photographer's dream. As is the Donna Nook Nature Reserve, but the baby seals are born in October-December, not the best time for caravanning.

I hadn't thought about Whitby, and don't really know anything about it.

Jule - I hadn't thought about the Cotswolds. It's not too far from us, but would be a lovely stopping off point for a longer trip. We've stayed there a few times with family over the years, but never on our own in the van.

Daisy I love Northumberland so much I can never really understand why anyone from the north travels all the way down to Cornwall!
Whitby is my favourite local seaside town

The Lake District is beautiful too.

Gem - Whitby looks beautiful and very interesting. I like the contrast between the two halves too. I've added it to my ever-growing list.

My daughter has a holiday home in South Wales. My sister, brother in law and myself stayed there for a week during the summer. We had an amazing time. The scenery and the weather was beautiful. I have booked to do a coach trip in March 19, to re visit. Tenby is one of the places I will be going. I have been before, it it beautiful.

You're right, Sunshine - it is beautiful. We really want to go back there at some point. Last time we had awful weather, even for February - but it was June! with just one beautiful sunny day when we went to St David's - OH's dad was ordained in St David's cathedral so we wanted to visit it. But even in such awful weather the coastline was fantastic - we nearly walked little Rusty and Clyde off their legs! I'm sure you will have a great time when you go back there in March.

I bet DD and family love it there. Do they go every school holiday?
