For my birthday in June my OH gave me a voucher to walk with alpaca in the Hambleton Hills. A lovely and most welcome present.
Today we went.
Although cloudy it was in fact a very hot afternoon, with sun breaking through a lot. We left our jackets in the car!
It is a lovely set up there. When you arrive you are shown the little cabin, which has a toilet, and an area where you can make tea or coffee or help yourself to water or juice from the fridge.
The 2 cats greeted us as we parked, and we saw the mother hen with 10 tiny fluffy new chicks.
When everyone was ready we gathered to hear about the alpaca and choose one to walk with. Once ready we all set off with our alpacas on leads and halters. We were told that they like to go quite slowly and want to stop and eat grass whenever they can. There were times to stop, let them all munch and stroke them. When walking it is best not to stroke them but to lead them firmly where you want to go Amazingly, I could lead mine. I cannot take dogs for walks, dogs take me, so I did think OH would have to lead it. My alpaca, which was the tallest was my height. I think it must be much easier to lead something at the same level as you! He was a very good boy.
We all walked with our alpacas up to the top of one field, along another, along a road, then another road and finally back to where we started , having done a big circle.
Once back we could give our alpacas a scoop of dried food, which they love.
Finally we said goodbye to our alpacas. We then went into a field to feed the mothers and babies. One mum was pregnant with a big baby I was told, so I was allowed to give her extra scoops
Tea and coffees were made for us and a box of ice lollies left on the table to help ourselves
