    Nearby fire closes Heathrow airport

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband says there are "lessons to be learned" after a substation fire brought the major airport to a standstill on Friday.

This is currently in the news.
They are reporting that Heathrow will be closed all day and possibly into the weekend.
Incoming flights will all be diverted of course.

We have just heard that our friends who have been away for over 6 weeks, have been diverted to Birmingham. Fortunately they travelled by train to London so don't have to go back for their car!

It must be causing chaos. Can you imagine what it must be like for air traffic control staff having to divert hundreds of flights, and the ground staff will need endless patience to cope with all the upset, angry and bewildered passengers whose flights have been cancelled.

Gem, at least your friends have been diverted in the "right" direction. I hope they get a train easily.

Son in law was in Stockholm, now in Brussels and booked on Eurostar tomorrow.

Grauntie, I hope your son-in-law's journey on Eurostar goes to plan. Imagine how many thousands of people must have had their plans turned upside down over this.

Gem, have your friends arrived home ok? Not the end to their holiday they would have wished for.

Our friends are home Daisy, thank. They are an unusual and fortunate case as they both worked for Network Rail before retirement and continue to have free rail travel. So, a last minute train fare from Birmingham to York and wasted one from London didn't matter to them.

Can’t imagine what the chaos was like at the airport yesterday. It was very quiet in the sky here.

Gem, glad your friends are home ok, and very useful having free rail travel.

Plant, I was surprised there wasn't more activity here going into Bournemouth Airport, or even Southampton, although Southampton's runway isn't long enough for some commercial planes.
