    Conflict in Sudan

It isn't often GRU comments on another country's internal conflicts, but this is something I'd like to mention.

There's been a lot of political instability in Sudan over many years, and this week-end the proverbial knife-edge was breached. To me this sounds unreal, since it's the Holy month of Ramadan. One of my oldest and dearest friend's husband is Sudanese and they are living in Sudan at the moment. I messaged her this morning hoping to hear that they are safe, and they are, but they can hear the fighting and gunfire all around them. They have had no electricity for the last 24 hours and the heat is unbearable. They remain inside their home, windows and doors locked shut and just wait for whatever the outcome is.

I'm sure their sons, who aren't currently in Sudan, must be worried sick, and I'm just grateful that they have internet access at the moment.

We see so many arenas of conflict in the news media, but when someone you love and care about is in the thick of it, it brings it home in a whole new way.

Daisy, I agree with you, I am sure Gem will comment on this!

Only today I was sat sewing, I heard a record, I think it was Donovan, The universal soldier, it is from the 60's I expect but so true what he sings.

      Lizzie, yes I will.

Over 20 years ago Lizzie and I had a mutual friend on a forum , who lived in Israel. We worried for her, and tragically she ,48 at the time, and her 13 year old daughter were murdered by the Hezbollah. We will never forget that incident or her.

Sending Hugs to you Daisy and hoping your friends stay safe

Thank you everybody. I'm particularly worried about my friend as she was very ill last year, and is waiting for further treatment, I believe.

Gem, I remember the feeling of horror when you told us about your friend in Israel. How can such things happen, but very sadly they do.

Oma, it is a horrible world with so many conflicts around the globe. Who benefits in the end? I really don't know. My friend lives near Khartoum airport where there was a lot of fighting yesterday. They are as ok as you can be in such a nightmare situation, and at least they have running water (which many parts of the city haven't) but the heat is stifling and the noise deafening. Plus, of course, the constant fear of what might happen next.

And so it goes on. My friend has described it today as a scenario of hell.

I have just heard from my friend that they have a route out of the conflict area. I'm not sure what the security situation is so I don't want to say more, but please wish them safe passage to peace. xxx

Thank you Gem and Lizzie. They've done the first part of their journey, but may have to wait for a few days now before the next stage.

I haven't heard from my friend now for several days. There seem to be various evacuation missions going on for foreign nationals, but Sudenese people themselves seem to be getting very little protection, and routes out of the city look hazardous. I hope she and her husband and his family are safe.
