The Texas Freeze

Texas, and several other southern states have been hit by snow and freezing temperatures, getting down to -18C a few days ago. They're not used to these conditions and have had huge problems with power cuts, frozen pipes and hapless drivers who don't know how to drive in these conditions. Water supplies are cut off, and Joe Biden has declared a state of emergency.

Can you imagine what it's like when normally your air con is your best friend and the temperature plunges that low!


But in a way, isn't it reassuring to hear that it's not only here in the UK when things go wrong because of exceptional weather!

It has been very cold for my friend in Illinois, with very deep snow, but that is the norm for them in winter.
I have experienced degrees of cold in Illinois and Wisconsin that I never imagined!

I read yesterday sadly a 11 yr old boy died of Hypothermia in Texas , he played in the first snow he had ever seen for so long when he went indoors he was already suffering from it , went to bed and didnt wake up poor child .

Gem, it's amazing how humans adapt to their environments. I remember chatting to a lady in California who taught in an Innuit school, and she said at -15C the children don't even feel they need to fasten up their coats. It was hard to imagine as we were relaxing in a swimming pool on a day when the temperatures were around 40C!!
