We have been quite lucky, due to my insider knowledge from my second favourite forum the DIBB!
We booked with KLM, but it is a codeshare with Virgin, and is is them we will fly with. We are on the cheapest version, Economy Light, no hold baggage included, and seats cannot be reserved until check in.
I asked a couple of questions of the DIBBers about this KLM codeshare with Virgin which we are booked on. There are so many members there, every question is always answered by someone!
A couple of posters had discovered that if we put our KLM booking ref into Virgins site, it appears we magically have Economy Classic, status there which included baggage, and more importantly we can reserve our seats! KLM says no seat reservation until check in and hold luggage to be paid for.
I followed the instructions and they worked so our seats are selected I told DDs last night so they can do the same.

Gem - well done on getting the seats and everything sorted out. I hadn't heard of codesharing (and didn't know that's what it is called) until we went to the States the last time. It sounds complicated but seems to work fine, and in your case you've got an even better deal.
