    School Reports

It's that time of year again when teachers sum up each one of their pupil's achievements, personalities and abilities in a couple of sentences.

What were your school reports like?

I always took mine home with dread because they always said 'Daisy could do better', 'Daisy must try harder' and other negative stuff like that. I don't think I got one positive comment in 5 years at the grammar school.

I don't remember having reports. I do detest the reports today that are churned out by computers.

Me too! I was far too argumentative and questioning to fit in well. Added to that there were a lot of well to do girls at my grammar school and they formed a group who pretty much excluded the few, like me, from the council houses. Mind you, I think that experience taught me how to argue and how to form alliances.

My reports were dire. I remember one comment : if MinnyString spent even a modicum of her time on the set books instead of on the texts which she thinks are important, her results would be a great deal better.

How interesting MS that we both became teachers!

Plant - they do seem to be over-mechanised, I agree. But even when we hand-wrote them you would inevitably find yourself falling back on over-used phrases out of desperation. The one I always tried to avoid in reports and UCAS statements was "X is a conscientious student" . It seemed like damming the hapless student with faint praise, but sometimes it was hard to find something different to say!

Josh had his report yesterday and as usual always excellent not like mine I never had a good report in fact the last year they wouldn't even give me one my head teacher said there was nothing they could say about me that hadn't been said a hundred times before and if I had actually put a full week in there still wouldn't have been anything . I was a good girl just wasn't interested the only thing I was good at was maths and sewing anything else bored me and my mind wandered. I could read write and good at maths that's all I needed . I may not be the best at spelling and punctuation but it's seen me through almost 60 years so far that's good enough for me . Strange thing is I encouraged my children to get a good education

I feel so sorry for teachers who have to spend so much time presenting these reports I am sure there must be a more time efficient way of doing it,I had average school reports only excelling in my Home Economics class every thing else was middle of the road again with Glamma could do better there was a group of about 6/8 in our form who always shone and always got the class prizes all I ever won was my swimming certificate.DS1 was amazing he somehow never got to bring home his school report he had some fab excuses for them not arriving, the best was " Mum Katie Belleau who lives over the Road was given my report by mistake and she went straight on holiday from school they will be away about 6 weeks so I'll pick up my report when she gets home " he must have thought I would forget about it because when I saw Kaite a week or so later she looked at me clueless when I asked her about said report poor girl was tongue tied as to what to say to cover up for DS1 lol.

My school reports from the Secondary Modern school always said I talked too much.(I know, there has been no change) my best subjects were English, goegraphy, history and science, in that order.I never got on with maths, still don't.
Sometimes I forget to like posts, but that doesn't mean I don't like them.

I remember hiding a particularly damning report at Senior School until the day I had to take it back signed by a parent!! The breakfast rush seemed a good time......but they still had time to read it!!
As a teacher I hated it when we had to use a computer program to write our reports. I fought against it until I was finally browbeaten into submission!

You must have had the same teachers as me. I have still got my school reports.

Mine usually said I could do better which I'm afraid was true! Some teachers said I was too quiet in class. All seemed to quite like me

Mine usually said could do better in practical subjects , I usually got a B or C for those but sports and domestic science (as called then ) I sometimes got an A .
I now know that if I hadn't of chattered and fooled around and took more interest in my school work I could have got a better job and who knows my life could have been so different. I was too happy to go along with the easiest option which end up with me taking a whole different direction in life than I visualised I would have !

I was good at English and art. I did well in those as it was no effort to me! I liked biology and RE too.
My 3 most hated topics _ maths, PE and needework!! I would spend a whole lesson trying to thread the damned machine!

My mam still has all my school reports, might go for a coffee and recap what was said about me, I know they started off really well my first year in school, last year really bad, I always played truant, was so bored in class but now think it was because I was out my depth, didn't understand a lot of it, so couldn't keep up with the "brighter" kids, I struggled with maths and science was a no no, them days you didn't get extra help the way you do now,

I think it's good now for my GK'st, the classes get split up into groups at there level not where your "expected" to be....K and T are in the top classes above there level, but E struggles and did used to get quite upset about it now she went down a level and is doing really really well, and most important enjoying it, they also have a class once a week where a parent can go in with the child and see what there doing, DS said there are grandparents who go and it helps them too, I must admit sometimes I look at kids homework and say "go and sit with granddad" grannies going to do this or that, because I would probably confuse them more....he's got the brains, I've got the looks....
