Places of interest in your area

I wasn't sure where to put this topic, so feel free to move it Daisy!

We all have areas or buildings of interest near to where we live. It may be interesting if we tell others about somewhere that means a lot to us. It doesn't only have to be one place!

I will start with York Minster. Although I am not a religious person I truly love the Minster and am very proud of it. It is very special building with so much history.

I'm another lover of York Minster, well love York full stop.
When DS and his partner went to Scotland at the beginning of July, they stayed in York for one night on their way home.
That is when and where they got engaged.
Sometimes I forget to like posts, but that doesn't mean I don't like them.

Gem - it's a lovely idea for a thread - we can easily move it if necessary, but leave it here for now.

I've never been to York, but it's on my bucket list. The Minster is such a magnificent building I can understand how you feel about it.

Nanto - how lovely that your DS and his fiancee chose York for their engagement.

We have several , Angel of the north , LumleyCastle , George Washington ancestral hall etc , Tommy the Soldier sculpture ,
The best known is Penshaw Monument ,
it sits high on a hill and can be seen for miles ,
If you are travelling you know your almost home when that is in the distance it’s a landmark that everyone loves .
When my children were small we lived in the shadow of it , my sister still does , we would take the children for a walk and picnic around it

There are so many places of interest near us that it's hard to know where to start.

We've lived here for many years, but only recently did we explore the historic walls and keeps of Southampton. Southampton has been an important sea port for hundreds of years, and the dock area most people are familiar with as the starting and finishing point of a cruise is actually built on reclaimed land. The original shoreline was as the foot of heavy fortifications, built mostly after a devastating attack by Pirate Grimaldi. Allegedly the ill-gotten gains were used to fund the Principality of Monaco.

The walk round the walls is fascinating, even more so with a knowledgeable tour guide to recount the history, including a Jane Austen connection and the only church which wasn't bombed during the second world war.

The village I live is is named after the William Penn who was a famous Quaker who founded Pennsylvania. We also have Windsor Castle within a few miles. Of course London is a short ride away.

Gemini I love your city of York.

              Now, where do I start?

              The Royal Observatory
              The Cutty Sark
              National Maritime Museum
St Alfage (where Henry VII and ElizabethI were baptised)
              The O2
              Eltham Palace
              The Queen’s House
A trip on the Thames by Clipper
              Greenwich Park

              And that’s just for starters!

I promise to do a guided tour if anyone decides to visit. I did that with Granny Jules a few years ago and we had a splendid time.

Sum1 - that sounds wonderful. I remember going with a school trip to the Cutty Sark many years ago, have taken our sons to the Royal Observatory and the NMM, but St Alfage, Eltham Palace, The Queen's House are all totally untrodden territory for us.
