Lizzie - that lady's comment made me laugh out loud! I'm not sure what the regulations are for twin axle trailers - our caravan is only single. Why does it all have to be so complicated.

Wow fancy rolling up in a Roller for your driving test! I've never seen one with L plates on! Can you imagine what the insurance would be like for a learner these days!

I passed my test in a very boring Viva saloon.

Mind you this was more than 58 years ago she is 77 now . The roads then must have been almost empty .
My Uncle was ex Army and very strict instructor . She hasn’t drove for many years now like me she gave up and wasn’t enjoying driving anymore , She did help in his business but never drove the Bride 😁

Oma - you talk about empty roads - yes a lot less traffic than today, but when I took my test it was Potteries Wakes when all the factories closed for 2 weeks and everyone went to the seaside. Just my luck then, that one road the examiner sent me down was blocked by parked cars and a removal van!

What a responsibility, driving the bride on her big day.

I sat my driving test on a Wednesday afternoon when it was half day closing in the town. Very little traffic but it poured with rain. In those days you had to give hand signals, so I was absolutely soaked on one side when I got back to the testing centre. The car was a Ford Prefect(?) with 3 gears and a very long gear stick. My Dad let me borrow the car to go and see my boyfriend. I used to love driving all over the place, DB and I borrowed Dad's car when we could before we bought our own Ford Popular. We swapped on a Friday so we had it for the weekend. If you were going uphill when it was raining, the wipers would slow right down, but going downhill they went like the clappers! Great fun.

WeeGranny, those were the days!!!! Hand signals, often having to "swing" it to start it!!

WeeGranny - Oh the dreaded hand signals. Do you remember policemen on point duty as well? I could never remember which way you should hold your hand for 'straight on' - palm facing the policeman or back of hand! I remember a friend having a car with windscreen wipers as an optional extra - you had to switch a little lever over at the top of the windscreen.

Power steering - never heard of it then and synchromesh on second and third gears was a luxury. Double declutch for first-to-second gears!

Lizzie - using the choke to start as well, and then being careful not to leave it out too long so it flooded.

Fast forward to my DIL1's car which can literally park itself.
