    Who was your first friend?

Oma's lovely photo of her GS1 and his friend set me wondering about childhood friendships.

Who was your very first friend?

Mine was the boy next door - then we moved away and although our families kept in touch and remained friends it wasn't the same. We grew up, he emigrated, I moved around. So we hadn't seen each other for many, many years until a couple of years ago. Incredibly when we did meet up after a life-time of living very different lives, we still laughed at the same things and picked up where we left off. OH met him for the first time then, and they were instantly on the same wave-length.

I was just thinking, when I was small we lived next door to a transport cafe, the owner had 2 boys, the eldest was my brothers best friend and the youngest, Syd, a year older than me, I worshipped him and followed him all over, spent hours with him on his fathers small holding, looking after the pigs, chickens etc. When we moved house I met new friends but was always friendly with him, sadly he now has dementia and won't remember any of it.

After we moved I had a best friend for years, strange, she and Syd shared the same birthday and I have never forgotten that. I met up with her a few years ago, again sadly she lost her hubby last year.

My first and best friend was a girl who lived next door but one, she was the youngest of a big family as I was. We didn’t go to the same school as she was Catholic but we played together in our garden a lot. I was her bridesmaid and we still keep in touch, used to see her and her family but they moved to Devon some years ago. I last saw her and her OH about 6 years ago.

My first friend was a girl at my primary school. Her parents were divorced and the man who lived with them wasn't her dad - very rare in those days!
He must have adopted her as I remember her surname changing.
Sadly they moved away when we were 7 or 8 and I never had another close friend at that school.

I was friends with the girl in the farm cottages. We were the only girls in our road but we always joined in with the boys. I last saw her at my 21st!
I’m still in touch with my first friend at secondary school (I had moved so didn’t know anybody). Last time I saw her (before COVID)we went bug hunting, she’ll never change. 😆

I was friends with most of the other children who lived in our terrace, before i started school.
After starting school i became best friends with a girl who had come to live very near us.
We met up a few times after leaving school. The last time we met up was just after we had both had our eldest child.
Still send Christmas cards every year to each other, but that is the only contact we have now.
Sometimes I forget to like posts, but that doesn't mean I don't like them.

I met my Best Friend on our first day at school, she was passing my gate as I was coming out. She only lived round the corner but we had never met before. We have always been in touch. She is Godmother to my two and I’m Godmother to two of hers. We’ve seen each other through thick and thin. Weddings, divorces, moving house etc. She keeps me sane, we laugh and cry every time we meet. She’s a no holes barred type of friend.

grannyjules - that is the very best kind of friendship, and it's certainly stood the test of time and life.

Does she live near you these days?

Yes she’s back in town, and I trim her hair every 4 weeks, and take lunch. She’s not as fit and able these days. She makes a good cuppa anytime 😁

GJ - I'm sorry your good friend is feeling her years, but I bet you still have lots of fun and a good laugh together.
