I did a summer job in Bath selling the "spring water" to the tourists in the pump rooms only it wasn't spring water. It did come out if the ornate pump but it was supplied by big plastic containers. We were told it was genuine spring water but I have always had my doubts. I had to wear a stupid milking maid outfit, still I needed the job at the time.
I also, when my son was very small, made tennis balls and also addressed envelopes. Both jobs on slave labour wages. I was in my own with my son at the time and even though the pay was very small at least I was earning some money when I was at home and baby was asleep. Not a lot but every little bit helped s my full time job was not a well paid job either. I thank God that these days (touch wood) I am able to afford to live without worry. If you want to go fast go alone, if you want to go far go together

My worst job was my first one! It was in a solicitors and I was a junior secretary, straight out of college at 17. The office was dark and dingy, my ancient Imperial typewriter sat on an old fashioned sloping ledger desk, and my chair was wobbly with a disgusting cushion on it and it was in a dark little corner of the general office. I was secretary to a really horrible man who looked at me as though I was a bad smell on his shoes. On the Wednesday I took the day off and went for another job, which I got. Gave my notice in on the Thursday and left on the Saturday! I was quite upset though as I'd been interviewed by one of the partners for the job and he was really nice, and I think he would have been horrified if he'd understood what that man was like."Joy is what happens to us when we allow ourselves to recognise how good things really are. I worked for Electrolux when we moved to Surrey from Yorkshire. My job was to book the engineer for repair call outs. There were about 10 of us. One woman swore (and I mean disgusting swear words) at the customers and got away with it, I don't know how. I left after I was sent to Coventry by two other workers. On the day I left one of them came clean and told me they thought I was telling tales on them (they were both having affairs) to the supervisor as she used to call me in to her office and talk to me for ages about her guilt over something in her past! I did get an apology from the two workers, but I couldn't wait to leave such a bunch of misfits behind.Women are like tea bags; you never know how strong they are until they are put in hot water.

My first job I had was my worse. I was 15 and I worked in a hotel as a waitress/general dogsbody. I had to be at work very early every morning to serve breakfast but that also included preparing the breakfast. The hotel owner omitted to telling me that to save her money she had each member of staff do the job of two people.Bring me sunshine in your smile.

When I was 18 I had a summer job in a factory sewing Pinky and Perky buttons on children's pyjamas. One day I stitched a whole batch on back to front and the Overlooker shouted at me 'Call yourself a bleddy student? You can't even tell back from front'.
Then I was moved to labelling boxes because I was the only one who could spell Directoire Knickers.
It was quite an education though. One woman used to charge her husband 2/6 every time they had sex because she said they would never have enough money to go on holiday otherwise as he was spendthrift.
I also had a nub in a canteen which I hated, mainly because my mental arithmetic wasn't too hot.
And one Easter a friend and I did flower picking on Tresco. That wasn't much fun.
My most rewarding job was when I worked in a leprosarium in the long vacation when I was a volunteer in East Africa. I saw some terrible things and some remarkable courage. I used to go with one of the sisters deep into the rain forest to find patients who hadn't turned up at the outpatients clinic to make sure they took their medication.

My worst job was as a waitress at Butlins, Primrose Valley, Filey. One of the summer holiday jobs whilst I was at College. The kitchen floor was hazardous....two inches thick with grease, at least. We all used to 'skate' to avoid ending up on our backsides. We carried stacks of dinners & every time, to the campers amusement, a plate etc smashed, a loud cheer went up in the dinner hall. When I heard it was the Glasgow (sorry any Scots folk) week I left. I shared a chalet with two other girls who liked to invite different blokes back after their night out. Worst of it was, I was on the top bunk. As this wasn't bad enough one girl used the sink as her toilet!
Best job was my Saturday job in a sweet shop. They sold tobacco too. I loved the chit chat of the coal miners who came in for their weekly amount of chewing tobacco. I wasn't allowed to serve this because it had to be cut into lengths according to weight & the shop keeper didn't think I was capable of doing it without waste."Good friends help you to find important things when you have lost them....your smile, your hope, and your courage."

My worst job like Daisy was in what now seems to have been a Dickensian office. Dingy with uncomfortable office furniture and horrible male colleagues. In those days in London you could walk out of one job on a Friday and pick up another on the Monday so I quickly moved on. Another rather dingy office in EC3 but there was one improvement - it was a wine merchants and there were lots of free samples. Tastings at lunchtime too My favourite job came much later when I went back to work after having the children and started working for a Consultant Neuropathologist at the local hospital. Very interesting indeed although I was alarmed the first time I went in to take notes to see an entire brain sitting on the bench ready for dissection whilst I composed post mortem details and did the report.Be careful when blindly following the Masses.

I have never had a job I hated.
My worst job has to be delivering the Christmas post. I was 17, so was on the lowest rate of pay, which went up at 18 and 21. My post bag was so heavy that every morning postmen had to lift it unto my shoulder. It was far too heavy for me to lift. I already had a spinal defect , diagnosed when I was 11. I'm sure this must have made it worse!“A grandchild fills a space in your heart that you never knew was empty.” – Unknown
