I found it hard to understand WHY a young boy would accept death and not want to be saved. However eventually when it became clear that he had a rather romantic idea of fading away, rather then the reality ahead if him, it was easier to understand why he felt as he did. He had the facts, so he thought, but in fact he didn't really.

Me too! But in many ways I felt that the issues he had chosen to focus on were easy targets. I think that the book ( which I thought was extremely well written) would have befn much more powerful if the judgement call was a very fine one indeed. One where both sides have merit and excellent argument and where it really does need the judgement of Solamon and where ultimately, there are no winners.

I'm glad you suggested the book. It is one I had never heard of, and would probably not have read.

I think we have to either bribe them in with alcohol, or force them in with long poles next time!! I am disappointed that our first book club is so small,.

I also wish I had waited until closer to this date to read it! I am a quick reader anyway and this was a short book. The details would be clearer to me if I had read it more recently

So am I. We seemed to have a lot of interest when it was first suggested but clearly it's a damp squib. Wish I'd gone to HistorySociety instead

Aww, did you miss something to be here tonight?
I don't think we should give up on The Book Club so soon, but I would like to have at least half a dozen contributors for the next book discussion.

Just wondering if there's any mileage in extending the discussion over a couple of weeks after starting it off on one particular time.

However, as you say it really does need six or more members to be engaged and to be fully involved

We could all just read the chosen book and discuss it here, not necessarily all at the same time as we have always done. People could ad their comments at any time, and others can add theirs and respond, as on other threads. We could perhaps try that next time?

It couldn't really be any less successful than just two of us

Because I love reading and read a lot I can't understand why everyone isn't wanting to join the book club!! Which is I suppose like me not understanding why everyone doesn't love cats LOL.
We're all different, but I know more members do love books and reading.

Sorry, fell asleep, painkillers probably. I found the story very interesting. I had a lot of sympathy for the Judge her husband needing another fling before it was too late. Then doing her best for Adam a young man needing a transfusion who had a romantic idea of committing suicide. Very interesting story, bit too short, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Enjoyed reading this book although it wasn't one I would have read otherwise so thanks book club ! Lots of unpredictable twists and turns and difficult to predict outcomes which is good. It was interesting to find out more about the system of law and I did think that it had been very well researched, not always a comfortable read but nevertheless informative and thought provoking. Looking forward to the next one. The flower festival meeting was good too sorry to be a late contributor.

Sorry to see so few people joined in. When my eyesight is sorted I hope to join the book club discussions at a later date. The book sounds a good choice tho'. One to read later I feel.
