    World Book Day 2020

I have enjoyed watching on TV lots of examples of children dressing up for Word Book Day today.

My 7 year old grandson has gone as Noel from the Danger Everywhere books. These are very funny and I love reading them with him.

I watched on this morning Gem ,
I think its lovely but I do worry about families with several children who cant afford costumes , if those children go to school without one they are going to feel left out and sad .

Maybe schools should have lending library's with donated costumes as most children only use them once don't they .

I went out quite early to go to the hospital and passed two schools, children arriving in costume. I think it is hard on some families that can't afford a costume and don't have a clue how to make one.

DD2 is a ‘playground assistant’ these days. She went as Norman the Slug with a Silly Shell. I have yet to see a photo! I seem to remember making our own costumes was half the fun. There are many characters that are easy enough to copy for very little outlay.

Seen a lot of kids dressed up on Facebook.
Sometimes I forget to like posts, but that doesn't mean I don't like them.

I love to see them, and ideas can be quite simple. Someone on This Morning made a Golden Ticket from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, using a roll of gold wrapping paper cut to shape with a hole for the head . Just ordinary clothes worn underneath.

I tend to agree with Oma. I'm sure some costumes are really easy, but some parents (I was one of them) can't even do an easy costume, and some just don't have any spare money for even the simplest props, and some just haven't got time, and, sadly, others just don't care.

Also some children hate dressing up.

Our two GDs went as a fairy and a mouse today. I don't know what specific characters they were, but I bet GD1 (the fairy) was freezing cold!

My DD always made GS1 costume but she's very arty and inventive , but as you say Daisy some people have no idea where to start or money it always worries me ,
I know teachers are busy people but wouldn't it be nice if children made their own simple costumes even if its only a hat and tabard with the pictures of the books they love ,

Your right about some not liking dressing up , One of my great nieces had a photo of her two on FB , my GG niece was all smiles she's 9 but my GG nephew who is 7, wow if looks could kill , he had a face like a smacked backside , he was not happy at all . I bet his costume didn't last long

GS2, almost 4 hates dressing up and won't even put a dressing up hat on. It will remain to be seen what happens next year when he is at school.
His sister and cousin have always enjoyed dressing up.

All my GCs are/were happy to dress up, but neither of my sons were keen, especially DS1. But with the limits of my costume making skills, who can blame them!

My Class Assembly always used to fall on World Book Day ( someone who did the timetable obviously didn't like me!) and it was bad enough having to dress up without it being in front of all the parents too! As you can see, I'm not a lover of dressing up but I always made an effort. One of my colleagues who had dressed up as a rabbit, was involved in an accident on the way to school and I think the policemen weren't sure whether to breathalise her or not!

WeeGranny - I sympathise having to dress up. I used to hate Comic Relief at college. And Red Nose Day. I was a proper misery!

I had to laugh about your colleague though. "Well you see, Officer, it was like this. I came out of my warren and got into the car, and my nose started twitching, which meant there were carrots nearby, and I was busy looking for the carrots ...."

I'd like to have to dress up for work Any excuse to dress up at Halloween just to answer the door!
I always want fancy dress NYE, but we don't think our friends would want it. (I could do a poll I suppose!)

I suppose it would depend on what you wore to work, if it wasn't your choice, that wouldn't be good.

I got two pictures of my GD. One was of Snow White, the other a spotty dog from 101 dalmations. The caption below said ' Mummy wanted Snow White ....F wanted a spotty dog'. It's hilarious as she's flopped down to the floor pulling the angriest expression ever, in her Snow White costume. In her doggy costume she's as happy as can be.🤣 Her brother was Batman.

My other two GC were Thing 1 & Thing 2. Youngest went into his older brother's class first thing, as he's in the school Nursery. Mummy had even put blue non-permanent colour on their hair. The eldest, (almost 9) came out & burst into tears as they'd been teasing him all day saying the blue wouldn't come out of his hair. It did of course.

It seems to be like most things. It starts out as a good idea but some people take it too far. It's a good idea to have a collection of spares for those who can't afford it Oma. DD2 said they were doing a week's book events at her son's school. She gave the teacher a super hero costume for a little boy who she knew that his mummy couldn't afford one. You'd think all his Christmases had come at once. Bless.💕

A lengthy post I know but just to add on to this there was a little girl dressed in a shaped green sheet, hard to describe really. My DD asked which book the costume was from & she was a 'bogey' or 'snot' as she said. Ha!🤣🙊
