    Favourite Children’s Books

After Reading Gemini’s post about seeing the Secret Garden in the theatre I was wondering if anyone had favourite books as a child that you still enjoy now.

The Secret Garden was one of my most favourite and I have it in my kindle and still read it from time to time. All the What Katy Did books, Little Women etc, Anne of Green Gables are all books I downloaded when I first had my kindle and I still enjoy dipping in and out and rediscovering all my favourite characters.

Enfys I too like to re read my favourite children's books.

I read avidly as a child. I was lonely a lot of the time, and escaping into the world of books was my joy, that and drawing.

    Amongst my favourites were
Peter Pan, Little Women, What Katy Did, all the Mary Poppins books, Enid Blyton books, especially Secret Seven and Mallory Towers, Alice in Wonderland and Through The Looking Glass. Also a book called The Swish of the Curtain by Pamela someone, about a group of children who set up a theatre company. I read all of these many times.
I didn't discover the Narnia books until my late teens, but loved them, and will re read those soon.
Of course I loved all the Harry Potters, but they were written in my daughter's childhood, not mine

Gem, I was the same, I think being an only child meant I was on my own a lot, so my books were my friends and I also loved drawing and painting. I also loved all the Chalet School books, nice memories.

I could never read Alice through the looking glass, the odd charters frightened me as a child and even now I find them disturbing .

I had forgotten about the Katy books I loved those , I read the Famous Five and Secret Seven books by Enid Blyton and she also wrote a book called The Boy Next Door which I remember reading over and over again.

My all time favourite has to be Anne Frank Diary but would that qualify as a Childs book or rather a book I read as a child/ teenager ?

Enfys - exactly the same here. Like Gem, reading was my escape into another world, and the house could have caved in around me and I wouldn't have noticed! I also loved drawing and painting, and I played the piano.

I adored the Chalet School books - I think I read all of them, and there were a lot. I was interested to read about the author's Elinor Brent Dyer's life. Not what I'd expected at all.

I love Enid Blyton - Secret Seven, Famous Five, Mallory Towers and the 'of Adventure' series like the Island of Adventure, and when I was younger, The Magic Faraway Tree, the Enchanted Wood etc. and I remember loving a book called (I think) Bimbo and Topsy about a dog and a cat. There was also a series called Willow Farm, and I loved those too. I didn't read many of the classical children's books, though. Alice in Wonderland, What Katy Did are about all I can remember!

The more I think about Enid Blyton books, the more I seem to remember reading. there were the Mystery books - Mystery of the Invisible Thief and quite a lot of others - Amelia Jane, The Secret Mountain and other in that series.

Did anybody get the Sunny Stories magazine as well?

I'm really pleased that in this day and age with so many other options, my GD1 adores reading as well. If she can't go to the library at least every other week she gets withdrawal symptoms.

My GD too, Daisy She is always reading. All my DD's (and their dad) love to read, but as you say, in this day and age there so much more to do than when we or our offspring were growing up.

I had the little Sunny Stories books

Enid Blyton as a child , I was in her club loved The water Babies , Heidi , etc . As I got older it was Catherine Cookson , but to be honest I would read anything I got my hands on , my mother could talk till she was blue in the face and she would say" you haven't heard a word I said have you ?"
I was in another world when I picked a book up ,
Im still the same and if it really interests me I can carry on reading all day till I finish it .
I have a Kindle but haven't used it for a while as my DD keeps giving me books she has read , DD likes to feel and smell a book although she does have a kindle
Books were always important as my children grew up ,DS was a avid reader of the Lord of the Rings and that sort of book but he said he never reads now ,such a shame said he doesn't have time , DD still loves to read
Im not fat just 6ft too small

Oma - isn't it sad that our children often say they don't have time to read! My DIL1 never reads fiction, although my DIL2 does, but not very much. Both DSs seem to read non-fiction but again, not very much.

My mum used to tell me off as well! It never made any difference though!! LOL

It’s funny isn’t it, you have two children and one is a real bookworm and the other just not interested. The same with the GC, must be in the genes.

I have just bought on eBay 7 Chalet School books! I know, I’m a big kid... but I had loads of the hard backs and got rid of them years ago...they are going for a fortune on eBay! These ones are reprinted paperbacks so very cheap, am I sad to be really looking forward to reading them? 😳. Especially as they are ones I haven’t read.
