I went to see a live screening of the 30th Anniversary of this event last night. It was in a local cinema and was a sell-out.
I had no idea what to expect (the ticket was a birthday present from our GD's other gran, and she kindly drove there and back through torrential rain!)
It was beautiful, funny, crazy, totally bonkers, heart-tugging and you really didn't know what to expect next. There was some beautiful singing, although a couple of the operatic arias were a bit above my rock chick head, and excellent musicianship.
We were both a bit frustrated that when AR announced the final song it actually went on for another 8 or 10 songs!! We both thought one or two encores are fine, but this drawn out finale was a bit frustrating.
The highlights for me were some very good musicians, the staging - the background changed to suit the music - and the atmosphere of hundreds and hundreds of people at the event clearly having the time of their lives. Although there was one man who seemed to be permanently in tears. I loved the little glimpses into the lives of all these total strangers having fun.
The first link is to AR's YouTube channel and one of the beautiful, serious pieces played last night, the second is Zorba's Dance, which gives a good idea of the atmosphere. They didn't play this last night, but did play Havana Guila - very fast!
