    Grease

The last time we went to the theatre was March 2020 - and that was a tour backstage, so it's probably around 2 years since we last saw a production.

On Wednesday we went to see Grease at the Mayflower in Southampton. Out of a party of about 20 of us who should have been going there was only us and two friends. Everyone else had backed out - but they missed a treat.

We were all a little nervous, to be honest, and wore our masks throughout. As did the lady and her 13 year old daughter sitting next to me - but we were in a small minority. There were very few empty seats, and a lot of teenagers which quite surprised us.

It was a great production, with fantastic choreography by Arlene Phillips. We were in awe at the sheer energy of the cast - especially after a matinee earlier on.

I got chatting to the lady next to me and she had worked in theatre in Birmingham when she was younger - Gem I'm sure you and she would have had lots to talk about! Like you, she has really missed not being able to see live theatre for so long.

It was a lovely evening - apart from finding the west-bound route out of the city closed for roadworks when we were going home.

I was also quite shocked at how many people were out and about late at night. A lot of them looked like students, but I suppose that's to be expected with a large student population.

I am nervous, but also ready, as it were! All being well I will be in a theatre on December 22nd.
I would like to go sooner really.

Well done getting out there Daisy, and I'm glad you had a good night. We saw a production of Grease about 3 years ago and were also surprised how many young people were in the audience. It's obviously hit a whole new generation!
Like you I wish the majority not the minority wore masks.

We were all nervous and felt a bit like brave (or stupid) pioneers!

This particular group of people who normally go on theatre trips will all be going to the club's annual Christmas Dinner which is in a room with low ceilings, no ventilation and is very crowded, and of course no-one will be wearing masks as it's a meal. I don't understand their logic, and needless to say we won't be going.

People can be strange as to what they consider a risk Daisy!

My friend won't meet me for our regular pre Christmas lunch as I wont sit outside. She would however be happy to travel in by bus!
I consider a bus, where most don't wear masks and you have no control as to who may sit right next to you, a much riskier thing than us sitting on our own table in waitress service restaurant!

It is odd, Gem. Perhaps I'm kidding myself, but I like to think what ever risks I am taking (ie there is always something unknown) they are considered and have a basis is logic. I would definitely agree about the risk of travelling by bus.
