I can remember having a toy machine when I was a child. My mother was a good knitter but not a needlewoman. They used to have kits to make clothes in magazines, don't see them now. I used to be able to buy remnants of things like Harris Tweed in the market. I think it was my MIL whom I followed, she would make clothes using several patterns. Although she didn't help me she made me think I could do that.
