I had a lovely Needlework teacher , she was quite elderly and crippled with Arthritis in all her joints , it made it difficult for her to hold a needle but she was so patient and even the worst sewers got praised highly for at least trying ,
We had to make all our cookery aprons and P.E skirts etc and often she would finish bits off for those who just couldn't get the hang of it ,
The first piece of proper clothing I made was a little dress for my niece it was a shocking pink Bib and brace type , she was only 2 at the time and my sister loved it ,
That gave me the confidence to make all my DD'd dresses, coats, nightgowns etc
I used to make my own skirts and blouses too and curtains, Duvet covers etc ,
Sadly its many many years since I last did anything
Im not fat just 6ft too small

I enjoyed needlework at school too Oma but in the 3rd year we had to choose between art and needlework and I chose Art much to the surprise of the needlework teacher.

Plant - I sympathise having to choose between two subjects that you liked. Things don't change much - our GS2 has just had to choose his options for GCSE and has had some difficult decisions to make!
