End of an era for the pantomime

The Theatre Royal York pantomime is fabulous. Different to any other it has has evolved over the years to feel more like a huge group of friends. We even have FB groups about it!
Booking opens in March, and if you want to go any time close to Christmas, you must book then
Our dame Berwick Kaler has been the face of our panto, he writes, directs and plays the dame. He is funny and non smutty. He has spoiled me for any other panto dame with their double entendres and toilet humour.
He hails from Sunderland but made York his home many years ago. His opening lines of 'Me babbies, me bairns!' has put Christmas on the right track for so many of us each year

This year was Berwick's 40th year. I have seen all but one of his pantos. I was pregnant with DD2 when I saw his first. None of us knew he would still be doing it aged 72!

We knew the day had to come when he would retire, and it has this year.
I have watched him perform, with my husband, then husband and children, and mum and dad came along too for many years. Then when OH and I parted it was just me and DD3 for a couple of years. Then DD2 came along too when GD was old enough and we 4 went for a few years. This year no DD3, as she is in Canada (so sadly misses Berwick's last panto) but DD1 brought GS1 along or the first time.

We are all sad, but want him to have a happy retirement as he has had his health problems recently. 4 other cast members have been with him for decades and others for several years. Once in a York panto you don't want to leave it seems.
We don't know what the future holds. Traditionally Berwick announces next years panto on the last night which is February 2nd.
We dearly hope that he will still be involved, with writing and directing, but we don't know. I also hope all our other favourites stay.
Whatever happens it is indeed the end of an era. A wonderful one.

He's earned his retirement, Gem, but I do hope the traditions he's created will continue. What would you do without your York Panto to start your Christmas celebrations. xx

I 'liked' this because I 'get' it - not because I like the idea of you going into a decline!

We had good news about this year's pantomime this week.

Berwick Kaler is to write the script. We don't know if he is to direct it as well.
The other 4 main supporting regulars will be in it, so we are happy 😊

Booking opens tomorow. 9am in person, 3pm online . OH is playing in a golf competition and I don't think it's fair to make GS2 queue with me, so I will have to do the online booking at 3. I don't have to go for GD tomorrow, so can be online ready and waiting at 3!!
DD and SIL in Canada have put their order in!

Which seats do you normally get Gem? Do the panto tkts sell out quickly?

LOL yes that's why we book in March Nana

This year with no Berwick it may not be so popular, but I wouldn't bet on it. It depends when you want to go too. If you want to go earlier December or later January I'm sure you can leave it some time. For anywhere close to Christmas and New year you need to book early. We go just before Christmas. My choice would be the period between Boxing Day and New Year, but it restricts the others who often go away during that time.

We have always chosen Dress Circle, preferably row A or B. However after the Theatre Royal 'improvements' 3 or 4 years or so ago, row A now has little leg room, so we go for row B. I have never been a stalls fan, but the stalls were totally revamped and now rise up so the back row sits just below the Dress Circle now, making seat towards the back of the Dress Circle now really good ones. That is what I aim to get today, but we shall see!
