    Pop Up Shakespeare

This summer a recreation of the Rose Theatre is being built in York. This will be the home for four Shakespeare plays, in repertoire between June and September.
I was very excited when I heard and was determined to go. I found a few friends who were keen as well. As the tickets are not cheap I can only afford to go once, and as A Midsummer Nights Dream is my favourite that is the one we are going to see, in August.
Not only are the tickets pricey, there is a one pound charge to print at home! Preposterous!
Anyway, we are really looking forward to this, and are keeping our fingers crossed for a dry night!

That sounds lovely Gem. We have a Brownsea Island in Poole Bay and they perform a Shakespeare play every summer. Went one year and saw As you like it....complete with the Islands peacocks stealing the show. Enjoy the performance.

It sounds lovely, Gem. I've only ever seen one Shakespeare play live - at Stratford though.

Enfys - I didn't know about the plays on Brownsea Island! I bet that's amazing - such a fantastic location.

Oma - I wonder why you lost those posts! Is everything ok now?

Daisy, there is a Brownsea Island Theatre Company, been going for years. We had a very interesting talk from them at our Townswomens Guild. It was a lovely evening, everyone takes a picnic with wine and candles, then sit around an open air stage watching the performance.

Enfys - that sounds fantastic. I once went to the ballet at Osborne House (Queen Victoria's holiday home on the Isle of Wight, for those who were wondering!) It was magical. A cruise from Southampton to Cowes, time to wander round the grounds, a private tour of the house with canapés and drinks, then Coppellia by the ENO in a huge marquee with the ceiling lit to look like the night sky, a beautiful meal in the interval and a cruise back to the mainland. So I can imagine how wonderful the atmosphere is.

Daisy what a wonderful experience. Gem I'd love it but the prices are a bit steep...the extra charge for printing your own ticket too! I hope you have a great time.

Nana - it was wonderful - an evening I'll never forget. It was late June and perfect weather and the atmosphere was very special.

We had a lovely night at the Rose Theatre last night.
As mentioned on another thread, we had problems with our seats being changed. The change meant we had an extra flight of stairs to climb, and were of course higher up. We could see and hear fine though, and the whole experience and atmosphere of being there was wonderful. The four of us really enjoyed the production. The meal at the restaurant I had booked before the show was excellent, so I really lovely experience which I am glad to have had.
Everyone thanked me for doing all the organising, which was nice

One of our friends didn't know the play so I gave her a brief run down before it started. What I hadn't bargained on was Titania being played by a man, Oberon by a woman! I explained about that during the interval 'Just imagine the most beautiful woman the queen of the fairies!'

Gem - it sounds like a magical evening, and everything came right in the end. I think I read somewhere that in Shakespeare's day all parts were played by men or boys, but swapping like that fits in nicely with the theme of the play!

When is your next theatre trip?
