Clover and Wee Granny - I suppose none of us want to face the possibility that we or our spouses might have to manage alone, and I suppose we all have our own 'jobs'. It makes sense to sort things out while you can.
When my father died I was 18 and an only child. My mother had no idea how to run our finances other than housekeeping - in cash. She didn't know how to use a cheque book, do minor repairs in the house or even use a phone. She didn't understand about tax or insurance and to make it worse we were in the process of selling the shop so there was all the legal aspects of that to deal with as well a mortgage on our new home. I had to learn fast!!
My OH deals with the bills and finances, but he keeps detailed records and I know I could just pick it up and find everything if necessary. I think his biggest problem would be feeding himself if I wasn't around. I keep trying to get him to do some simple cooking, but a cheese sandwich at lunchtime seems to be the height of his culinary ambition at the moment.
