Oma - we don't realise how much we depend on our gadgets until they get poorly, do we!

Are either of yours under guarantee? I had a feeling your laptop was fairly new - or have I imagined it?

I dop hope they're soon fixed and in the meantime your phone is your new best friend! Good luck.

Oh dear Oma! My laptop is old and plays up. I definitely need to replace it this year. I hope you get them fixed soon.

My personal laptop is year old but I must admit I haven't used it for ages. My old iPad is five years old and will probably not be supported within six months. I have a new iPad which has exceptionally keen autocorrect which means that some sentences come out very strangely. I also have my work laptop and my work phone and personal phone. So in short I am overloaded with gadgets and Internet access.

I am always getting "invitations" from Aplesupport, apple people, Apple this and that to my work email address which is not connected in any way to either of my iPads. Aplesupport is not a typo, I get emails from them all the time. I just delete hem. If it is really important I think something will crop up on my screen or in the email address I use for my electronic accounts (and I have a lot).

I am using my desktop pc at the moment. Is 8 years old and very temperamental. DS has told in computing years 8 is a long time and I should be thinking of getting a new PC
I defrag, quick clean and delete most of the clutter that we get by browsing the internet .
I know that desktop PC's have gone out of fashion but I use it a lot , I have an iPad but I don't have microsoft office ( or the equivalent for apple ) on it so the iPad is just used for browsing and face book .
Does any ladies on here use a desktop or am I the only old relic here ?
When it does eventually give up on me altogether I think I will get a laptop ,they are not so cumbersome and it would free up space in the spare room

Mimi - yes, I have a desktop and love it. I hate using laptops because I can't touch type on them and everything takes me ages. My desktop is a Mac, which I've had for nearly 4 years. I wouldn't go back to Microsoft for anything. I hated all that waiting for it to boot up and all the security problems. Also, I've got a nice big 24" screen so there's plenty of room to have two browsers open at the same time, and it's great for using Photoshop etc. So I'm very, very happy with it and if/when it goes to the great computer heaven in the ether I'd definitely have another one. My iPad is only about 3 years old, so I'm hoping that will last a while longer!

Zizi - is your new iPad very different from your old one?

Oma - I thought I remembered you saying you'd had problems with your lappy. It sounds as though they really ought to be giving you a new one, but i don't suppose they will.

We have a desktop, very old and slow and relegated to the spare room rather than dining room where it previously lived, as we rarely use it.

I need a new laptop, and couldn't imagine nor having either a laptop or desktop pc. Tablets are great in their own way, but have so many limitations. Mine does anyway. Maybe if we had spent £200 pounds more on an i pad it would be better, but I didn't want to spend that much.

I do wonder, now that phones can do most things tablets can, whether the day of the tablet is numbered?

Gem - I think you may be right about tablets and phones, but for me the advantage of my iPad is size. I find it quite frustrating to read, say, emails on my phone, and I'm frustratingly slow using the phone keyboard. I need thumbs like the grand children's - they seem to manage fine.

Going off topic slightly do you think children are at a disadvantage if they haven't got an iPad? My sister said two of her GC have them. They are 6 & 5yrs old.

They are marketed at very young children too. MY GD2 had a Kindle Fire for her 3rd birthday. It's in a very robust case and parental controls are really good on it. She has quite a few Dr Panda type games on it and is very dextrous with it. Even though she can't read instructions she understands the symbols and instinctively does the right action with them. The only thing she can't do is put in the password, so she never uses it unsupervised.

I can remember so many youngsters, especially girls, coming to college at 16 with no computer skills and no confidence. Then they'd go out on work experience in offices at the end of their first year and come back highly delighted that not only could they use the office's computers, but they could show the staff quicker and better ways of doing things like spreadsheets! Hopefully this generation - our grandchildren - will have no such problems. There aren't many jobs these days where you don't need a computer at all, even if it's only for email.
