    The arrogance of youth!

Am on a train going to Wolverhampton for a meeting. Seat reserved but someone sitting in it, group of three. They had reserved seats so I just sat in the one that was left, fair enough. Then from Euston to Coventry all I heard were the two girls loudly discussing their jobs (which of course they are VERY good at) in some sort of IT role. I couldn't concentrate to work the were so loud. What annoyed me most was the discussion they had about people over 50 being thick, yes their word, at IT and their insistence that people over 50 should not be employed in a job that needs them to be IT savvy AND that the ones in their company who aren't up to speed should be made redundant. None of the group were older than 25.

Just before they got off the train (mericfully giving my head a rest) I said that they should not lump all over 50s together and some of us, even us 60 year olds, can handle IT and if it wasn't for us in the first place there would be no jobs for people of their age. They got off looking suitably shamefaced.

Good for you Zizi, they picked the wrong person to have that conversation within earshot, hope it left some impression with them.

The thing is chances are these two girls ( and many like them ) will looking at us old useless, thick complete waste of space over 50s to look after their babies so that they can go back to work.
We will be deemed good enough then !
Oh some days couldn't you just slap some people.

They did rather slip up on that one didn't they Plant? Yes Mimi you are quite right. That is exactly what happens. One of them is recently married and was very scathing about her husband which I thought was rather nasty. Still each to their own.

Good for you, Zizi. I get fed up with people younger than me thinking I'm useless at anything even slightly techie. I've commented on FB that the other thing that really annoys me is surveys and questionnaires where they ask your age and the oldest bracket offered is "50 +".

Oh, and another thing that annoys me is people (ie men-type people) who address remarks about anything technical to my OH instead of me.

I could go on ..... but I expect you have all had similar experiences!

When I temped at the leisure centre two young madams like this were totally undermining a lady who had been there for years. They would gabble the IT information at her and then tell the boss how she couldn't keep up! I tried to get her to keep a diary and make a formal complaint and offered to be a witness but she decided to take early retirement from a job she had loved.

Glad you were able to put these young women in their place! Why do people feel they need to talk so loudly anyway?

Good for you Zizi. I remember going to buy a new camera and the salesman was addressing everything to DH who said, dont't talk to me about it, my wife is the expert!! I wasn't really but he earned himself a gold star

Enfys - when that sort of thing happens I just want to walk out of the shop!

Once at college we were interviewing for a new IT technician in our department - the interview panel was the Personnel Manager (female), me and the College Head Technician (male). Whatever I or the PM asked one candidate he addressed his replies to the Head Technician. Then this candidate complained that he didn't get the job. What! Working in my department! Hah!
