    Passwords

Passwords are here to stay, we all have them now.

Do you have one, or several, can you remember them all, do you change them regularly?

I have many, for forums, emails, Facebook, various online shopping sites, Paypal, doctors surgery, the library.... the list goes on. Not to mention the various admin passwords connected to running this forum.

Years ago I had one password for everything. Over the years the number of passwords increased, and so did my security. Some of my passwords are similar to others, with slight differences in each one. Others are completely different. I can no longer store all these in my head, especially as I change them from time to time.

I have them listed in a little book which I keep nowhere near my laptop or tablet. I can remember most of them, but sometimes have to resort to the book!

I used to have some favourite ones but over time they have had to change because some sites want so many letter, some capitals etc. There is no way I can remember them all so I have to do the same as you Gemini. Of course the only ones not on the list are my bank details, I use them so much I can remember them

I know the main one's the rest are written in a little book. I am Administrator of our Condominium in Portugal and the on-line banking requires the password to change every 6 months!!! It can't be anything in a dictionary and must have a Capital letter and number .... honestly, you begin to run out of ideas!!

Sometimes I forget to like posts, but that doesn't mean I don't like them.

I have a number of different ones because the simple one I first started using years ago is no longer acceptable as it is considered not good enough. Some need numbers and letters and some need symbols numbers and letters the nightmare goes on. I store them all on the computer but the file is encrypted so I have to remember how to unencrypt them when I need to know. I try to be very diligent and keep a note of them all but occasionally I forget especially if I order something on line. They drive me mad but I suppose they are essential. One site I use makes me change the password every few months for security reasons and it feels as if it is forever asking me with another one. I saw a very funny piece in the Daily Mail this week about someone who's password was "fourwordsalluppercase" This confused other people who needed to use his system at work when he told them what it was. Especially as it was written in lower case letters.
Apparently the most common password is "password1234".

I haven't a lot of passwords, I use one in particular regularly. I was a little bit perturbed to see recently that once I am logged into my iPad on certain sites you see a small word "passwords" and when you touch it it brings them all up, even accounts I have deleted!

i keep a list of passwords and user names but change the name of the site such as Barclays is Basking, Debenhams is Debbie etc. No those are not the real ones! The list is pretty long as I am on a lot of sites for work as well as privately. Most of the time for the accounts I use regularly I can remember but sometimes there is a mad scramble to find the correct user name and password before I am timed out.

I was told (but it's a bit late to do it now) that the easiest thing to do is to choose a line of a song or poem, for example
Saint Agnes Eve, ah bitter chill it was
The owl for all his feathers was a-cold

Then take the first letter of each word, so: saeabciwtofahfwa then add the initials of the site or company so for this you would add GRUS and add the date of your marriage or birth of a child to give the numbers, so 1979
That way you don't forget the password and don't have to write it down.

The password game gets more complicated as security becomes more of a nightmare. I have a book with all the sites I have a password for written in it and next to it is a number. I keep another list elsewhere giving the password to each number.

The bane of my life is Apple! I changed a password for an app a few months ago because I couldn't remember the exact password and needed to download something. When I got home I tried to reset it, and I can't use that first password again for 12 months! It feels like a prison sentence. But I can still use the original password as admin on my desktop!

Sum - that's an excellent way of choosing a password you can remember. I often use certain numbers or extra characters instead of letters, but it's a pain on my phone or iPad where you have to change keyboards backwards and forwards.

I have lost count as to how many passwords I have had over the years they started off quite simply years ago but now as we all know they have to be so strong in their makeup and have low and high casing and numbers banking is the worst one for me I always forget which is my main password and have to refer to my little "pink" book which for security reasons is not "pink" at all .
