We are getting there - possibly!

I can't help having a little whinge from time to time about our rubbish broadband connection, especialy when lack of a signal mean I can't post on here. About 6 years ago the rest of our village got new BT cabinets (those boxes at the side of the roads that look as though they might be a mini-Tardis) which enabled them to be wired with fibre optic cables to allow for high speed broadband.

Unfortunately, our cabinet serves a residential road on the very edge of the village and is sited on what is now National Park land. The problems with this outdated cabinet have only got worse as more houses have been built, and even worse with more people working from home and children needing the internet for homework (to say nothing of You Tube vids and online games).

The red tape involved in getting our cabinet replaced has been unbelievable - one resident even got planning permission for a replacement to go in his garden to try and get things moving. Well, finally we might be getting there. This week workmen have built a new cabinet. It's all shiny green and just a few yards from the old one. Of course, it doesn't work yet - but we live in hope.

I checked our broadband speeds today at just after 8 am and again at 2.15pm just for interest - Downloads were 3.48 and 3.46, Uploads 0.79 and 0.77. No wonder I can't post on here sometimes! Please keep your fingers crossed there will be no problems with actually getting the fibre optic cable to our new shiny Tardis!

Thank you - I think we'll still need luck to get this upgrade completed!

Oma - the figures mean basically, we can't do things most people take for granted and downloading a film is a distant dream. Even simple things on GRU don't work at times. A good example would be if I'm trying to go through everything in New Topics, I can't get from one topic back to the list I have to go through Forums and select from the list on the right. Often I type something and then it won't actually post. The 'working' symbol comes up but it's not working - the whole connection cuts out and we have to reset the router and start again.

I think a lot of cabinets are working to capacity as they were never designed for the amount of traffic going through them. We know even when our new cabinet is connected up we might not get a good service because our phone wires are aluminium, not copper. The quality of the lines gets worse when there's heavy rain, and the internet speed gets worse the further you are from the cabinet! We're one of the furthest away!!

Gem -there's more frustration than excitement in the Daisy household today.

Talk Talk sent us a new router, and DS1 installed it yesterday. Today our internet speeds are slower than ever - Download has gone from around 3.46 to 2.05, and we can't get into Gmail, Facebook, Ebay, You Tube, BBC, and most other sites. Surprisingly GRU is slow but accessible and so is Glitter Graphics. OH can't use Catch up on the TV and he's not a happy bunny.

              Grrrrrrr .........

Apparently it can take quite some time for the new router to 'learn' whatever it is it has to know, but because our internet is so slow anyway it's tipped it below useable speeds! OH has managed to get into his emails today, but not any attachments, but I still can't. Facebook is also inaccessible.

DS1 says it could take up to a week to get up to 'speed' such as it is!

Thank you, Plant. It is frustrating, but we'll just have to be patient!

Best of luck Daisy we have occasional problems with BT Vision where it breaks up then complete loss of picture,it doesn't really interfer with the broadband Mr G does get annoyed when it happens if he is on catch up or sport is showing,BT say that the system is fine so all I can think is its the weather as it happens when windy and wet.

If you've been following my catalogue of moans and groans about getting Fibre to our nearest BT cabinet you aren't going to believe this!

Our FB group got an email from our Parish Council to say that, at last, after about 6 years of begging, beseeching and downright subterfuge, our Cabinet now has FIBRE!

But sorry, the champagne is back on ice - there's no spare capacity for providers (BT, Sky, Talktalk, Plusnet etc etc) to give us better speeds!!!!!

Oh Daisy, how disappointing that there isn't room for your internet providor.
