    Technology Terrors

It's 30 years since the world woke up to find it was connected by the World Wide Web, and suddenly computers were taking over everything.

I think gradually ordinary human common sense has taken a back seat to The Computer. If The Computer says "No", that's it!

In addition, nobody believes who we are unless we've got the right bits of paper to prove it. We seem to need ID for quite ordinary things, whether it's a PIN, or a document with our photo on.

But I think my DIL2's experience at the bank yesterday takes some beating. She has put in a claim for PPI, and knowing how long things can take and how little time she has to spend hours on the phone or online, she's got one of these PPI companies doing it for her. It's against the bank she is still with for PPI mis-sold from her student days. She had to provide the bank with two lots of ID so she took her driving licence and her most recent bank statement into the bank. Driving licence was OK, but they wouldn't accept the bank statement - even though it was for her account with the same bank!! So in effect they don't trust their own documents.

What would they accept? A utility bill showing her current address which had her initials as well as her name on it! So say, a gas bill is more reliable than a bank statement in their eyes!!

    How crazy!

            Thank you Plant.

It's made more complicated that she changed her name when she got married, and understandably, moved house several times since she was a student! She took her marriage certificate in and made them copy that, and their recent Royal Mail redirection letter - they moved house very recently, so some things are still addressed to their previous house.

I think it's a case of paralysis by computer. We went into a different bank yesterday to close an account we don't use and transfer the money to our normal current account (hopefully to spend on new armchairs!!!) . We took every bit of identification we could think of in, and guess what they wanted - our PIN for the debit card on that account, which we've never used!! It took a good hour to close the account, and I bet the money takes 3 days to land in our CA!!

It's ridiculous the bank not accepting their own statements.
              Says it all really.

I bank with Lloyds and mostly on line although I am lucky to have a Lloyds bank within a short drive. They have been very quick to change my accounts in the past.

I’ ve had a kindle since the early days of their existence. I mainly read normal books but decided to download two kindle books that were part of two different saga type stories. Spent hours going round and round in circles. I eventually could see them listed but no obvious way to move them to a readable spot. At one point I thought I was nearly there but when I clicked on it I got pictures of 15 different cute dogs that someone from Amazon presumably thought I wanted to see instead. My iPad nearly went flying across the room. Why do they keep “improving” things that are working just fine? DD1 came to my rescue so I can relax!

Shem - I sympathise! This morning I spent twice as long as usual on making an online order for toiletries etc, which I do about every 3 months. They are in the process of 'improving' the site, which is usually slow and a bit clunky. It's still slow and clunky, but some bits have been 'done' and some are still the old system. Talk about confusing.

Just to update on the OP. My DIL did get compensation for the mis-sold PPI. It took a while, and in fact arrived the day before her birthday.
