Living in the dark ages of technology

I'm sure most of you have read my grumbles about our rubbish broadband service over the years. Most of our village has high speed broadband and get a decent service, but our little corner is shackled to the now infamous Cabinet 2 (those green boxes full of wires) which is totally worn out, as are the aluminium cables going from there to our houses - not even copper cables for us, let alone fibre optic.

We had a definite promise from BT that this would be replaced by October This was October 1915 and nothing has happened since, except for various interested parties throwing spanners in the works. It's so bad that it's affecting the prices of our houses because people don't want to live here, especially if they work from home or have children.

BT have said they expect to complete this work by March 2019, but we've heard this before, so the Parish Council is now getting into action. I've spent tonight putting together all the statistics I've kept over the years about our Broadband speeds and putting them into an email setting out exactly what the problems are for us residents. I hope all the other residents in our little bit of the village have done the same.

Surely it shouldn't be such a battle.

There, I've had my little rant and feel better for it.

It sounds like an ongoing battle Daisy, 2019 nearly 2020 you shouldn’t have to fight for a good broadband service, we are lucky here and do take it for granted we assume everyone has it . We have just had this fibre put in our street too , still Daisy it’s a damn sight easier than smoke signals 😬

Broadband is a necessary part of lives today, as you say some people work from home and need it to do their job. I hope it can be resolved soon Daisy

Its surprising how many people are unbale to get a good internet connection even though its hardly a luxury . Many school children need the internet to do their homework and lots of people work from home thus needing internet connection .

I find it hard to believe that even in out of the areas broadband access is so limited in this day and age.
When we moved here we requested that we be hooked up with fibre optic as we had been in the flat we had quick access for over 8years when we lived there,BT where surprised that I requested the fibre optic option and couldn't understand why we needed it when all the lines from the supply box where to properties which where occupied by pensioners, are we supposed to be second class citizens when it comes to things like this.

Qwerty, I had to laugh. Yes, it is better than smoke signals, but only if the wind is in the right direction. It only takes a heavy downpour of rain to knock our phone lines out! Because our wiring is aluminium it gets damp easily and then they don’t work.

Glamm, you make a really good point. So many people seem to think our generation don’t want to stream films, use social media or anything else. I’m sure they think we sit in our rocking chairs, snuggled into our shawls listening to that new tangled contraption, steam radio!

This must be so frustrating for you Daisy (as you sit in your rocking chair, with the steam radio)

It is ridiculous in this day and age they can’t get the broadband sorted satisfactorily. It is not as if you live on a dessert island. I wonder how the teenagers in your area manage. They cannot live without thei techy stuff. Enjoy your rocking chair, a good book and a G&T.

Sunshine, the teenagers manage with difficulty. I often find our GSs hanging out of the front bedroom window trying to get a signal on their phones after they’ve given up on their laptops!

Actually, Gem, a rocking chair and shawl seem quite attractive. 😉😁

I think we should install a couple of rocking chairs and throws in both the Tea Rooms and Granny's Rest Daisy 😁

I don't know how you've stood it for so long. I hope that by grouping together gets results.

Daisy, was it your GS who went on work experience to a tech company & is good with tech gadgets? Needing help with something please?

Nana - yes it was my GS1, but they're in Las Vegas at the moment. What's the problem? (Email or PM me if you prefer!)
