    A Clever Scam

OH answered the phone this morning to a call (supposedly) from a company called Domestic & General (D&G) with whom we have a guarantee on our washing machine. (We don't usually do this type of warranty, but there was a reason at the time why it seemed a good idea. To be fair, we have claimed and they have been very good.)

Anyway, the pleasant young lady was telling us that the company is offering what amounts to a 'free' year of cover, ie three years for the price of two, if we paid the lump sum up front, and as our renewal was due at the end of this month, would we be interested.

The machine is now 7 years old, so I suggested OH actually cancelled it as next time it goes wrong, we'll probably have to get a new machine anyway. The young lady said that wasn't a problem as they always replace with a machine equal to or better than the specification of the old one.

We were still hesitant. We asked what would happen if D&G ceased to exist before the 3 years were up. She assured us that that wouldn't happen - she has obviously never heard of the bank crashes of 2008, or of the demise of some of our High Street big-name shops. She went on to say all she needed to do was to check our credit card number - she knew it began with a 4 and there we were, all safe and sorted.

OH asked what bank account number was was charged to. The number she gave was correct - it's an account we use purely for paying household bills - but not the account we pay our credit card from.

By then, the rats were getting very smelly, and OH said he'd call her back. "That's fine" she assured us. "Oh, we have a new call centre number". I suggested OH used the old call centre number and ask for her. Needless to say, the call centre hadn't got a new number, and they referred us straight to their fraud department.

OH mentioned that we hadn't had a letter from them about the renewal, and they said that the letter was produced in March, although it may not have been sent out until some time later.

What we think has happened is that an (ex?) employee has used the renewal letters to contact customers trying to get £200 out of each one. As we were saying in another thread these scams can sound very plausible, and I'm sure many people have thought this was a good offer and possibly taken advantage of it. It's only when the monthly payments continue to go out of their account that they realise something's wrong. Provided of course, that they check their bank and credit card statements carefully.

Gem - it sounded totally genuine, and I can imagine anyone caught in a busy moment would just go along with it, because it did look like a good deal.

The other thing we found out today is that there are 'scammers hot lists' where names of people who fell for a scam, or very nearly did are shared with other scammers. We'll be even more on our guard now!

We had a similar one last week supposed to be for our washing machine but she slipped up and said my Hoover washer was due for renewal and if I went ahead with it she could give me a extra year free of charge just confirm my details ,
Trouble is I have always had a Indersit washer ,(sp)
When I said I have never owned a Hoover washer she hung up .

I will be on my guard from now on thanks for the warning Daisy,we are going to get to the stage where we will be frightened to answer the phone soon and it is not just our age group who are being targeted my DD said some of her friends at work had had similar and 2 where taken in by the scam to their dismay.
When something like this happens can the banks not tell where the money has gone and fraud charges be brought against that person who holds the account or do they wait until they have a certain amount and transfer it somewhere else.??

I wouldn't renew anything over the phone when cold called , you always get a letter before they expire anyway so I would if needed wait for that ,
To be honest most insurances are not worth it , a lot of stuff its just as cheap to renew , I have extended warranty on my Washer and TV but that's about it electrical wise ,
I wouldn't have taken up the offer anyway but when she got the make of my washer wrong I knew it wasn't right ,
Thing is they catch people off guard for various reasons , they try anything and out of every 10 calls I bet they get at least 1 that falls for it ,

Another scam yesterday, on my mobile phone.
An automated message asking my opinion on my recent experience of adding a new payee to my Lloyds online banking.
As it happens I had added a new payee the day before - but to my Halifax account. I don't and never have banked with Lloyds.
It was press 1 if you were satisfied, press 2 if not. I don't know what would have happened next, as I cut them off and blocked the number.

I wonder what would have happened if you had pressed 1 or 2 as suggested.

I had one yesterday supposedly from BT, mentioned my broadband connection. I said to them we are all wise to these scams, go away. I heard him saying in a strong accent mam it isn't a scam.
