    Inspiring women... then and now

Inspired by my granddaughter's book on inspiring women, I decided a thread like that would be a good idea.
I will start with aviator Amelia Earheart, as I have just had to check the spelling of her name to use in games thread.

Feel free to write about or add links about any inspiring women alive now or in history.

There was a lady about my age (bit younger probably!) on our local news recently who was a rally driver in the 1970s. She's just about to do another rally in the very same old Austin Maxi that she drove back then. I happened to meet her a couple of weeks ago, and said how I admired her get up and go. She was so positive, so full of life, and determination. I did tell her I thought she was an inspiration.

My inspiration goes way back. I think I was in my late 30s when I read a newspaper article about a poor old 'bag lady' as women who lived on the streets were called then. She was an alcoholic & drug user & was taken in by nuns. She was able to recover from her addictions with lots of help.

She began learning & reading & loved it so much that she worked her way up to achieve a degree & later an MA. She was my inspiration to study & showed me that you can achieve your goals through whatever life throws your way. I have the newspaper clipping to this day.

Maya Angelou (sp?) has also been an inspiration to me. Her words & actions have transformed so many millions of women's lives. Writer & poet.
