    Pets & Plants

I have always known that Lilies are harmful to animals but today I was reading about a lady who lost her precious cat after the cat had eaten tulip petals I had never heard of this before, also it stated that azaleas/daffodils/holly and hyacinths are also poisonous they all contain high amounts of toxins called lactones which are all poisonous to cats dogs and horses and even humans.I said to John we will have to keep a watch on our garden and what plants we put in but as he said how can we stop Oliver at least going into other peoples gardens and moouching about even if we keep our garden clear of these plants it is not possible.

It must be very unusual if an animal does eat those flowers but need to be vigilant
What is life if full of care we have no time to stand and stare

Glamm - there's a huge long list of quite common garden plants and flowers that your poisonous. Eva is very good and doesn't eat anything out of the garden, but I have to watch Cooper very carefully. I get twitchy when he sniffs the daffodils and hellebores, and have to stop him picking up snails, slugs and stones! He's got no
idea what harm they could do him, bless him! I don't know how you can stop a cat eating bad things once they are outside your garden.

As a Puppy DD had to watch Storm in the same way he would have a go at anything , as you say Daisy Snails and stones too ,
Never had a problem with her cats and she's had lots over the last 20 years ,
No matter how careful you are when they are not in your Garden how do you know what they are eating ?
I watched the Yorkshire Vet yesterday and a lady who owned a Tea room had taken her two little dogs in as they had ate a lot of Raisins ,
He gave them something to make them sick straight away as Raisins grapes etc cause Kidneys to fail in cats and dogs ,
You have to be so careful with titbits for our pets its a mine field ,
I wouldn't worry Glam I'm sure when he wanders Oliver is too full to nibble anything
Im not fat just 6ft too small

I knew about the lillies, but not about the other things.
Glamma,as your hubby says, how can you watch Oliver,if he goes in the neighbouring gardens.
Sometimes I forget to like posts, but that doesn't mean I don't like them.

I knew about lily pollen Glamma, I always cut off the stamens as soon as we get any.
Daffodils are poisonous, even the water. One of my cats is a devil for drinking flower water, so now we never fill any vase more than half full, and just remember to top it up.
              I didn't know about tulips.
It is so tragic to hear of pets lost in this way.
