    Tizzy the Dog

Just had my elderly neighbour hear absolutely distraught , Tizzy her beloved dog has just been put to sleep ,
they took her to the vet this morning for tests as she wasn't eating and seemed quiet , vet phoned 30 mins ago to say she had a massive tumour and there was nothing they could do and vet thought it was best to let her go and not wake her up ,
They are picking her up to bring home to bury in the garden in the morning , we said we would take them if their GS couldn't ,
They are such a lovely couple my heart breaks for them , I have said when they are ready to get rid of her stuff I will sort it for them , They wont have another dog now they in their 80's but Tizzy was only 8 they expected to have a couple more years . this is the down side of having animals isn't it .

Very hard especially given Tizzy's age. It does leave a big hole in your life.

The tumour was pressing on other organs so was very large vet said she would die within a week or two anyway so better she didn't suffer .

Oma - that's very sad. Your poor neighbours must be shocked and heartbroken. But they did the right thing in letting her go peacefully. Eight isn't old, unless she was something like a Great Dane, which makes it more of a shock.

I know someone who recently lost a very well-loved dog far too young, and she made a paw print picture and kept some of her fur, which she found a great comfort.

I think it's sad for them anyway but at their age they know it's the last dog they will have , They do have a lovely family who they see often , we like to help when we can as they are such good neighbours , very tolerant and sweet natured people who if they are able would help anyone ,

How sad and what a shock for them 8 is certainly young to be saying good-bye to your dog but at least they have done the right thing for the little dog, would they not consider short term fostering from one of the Charities where they don't have to officially own the dog but get the same rewards while a permenent home is found or are they too old to do this do you think.

What a shock it must have been for your neighbours . It's so sad , a dog is more than a pet it's a member of the family

Oma - the hardest dogs to rehome are the elderly ones. All the rescue centres have dogs who are healthy, but 12-15 years of age, not needing much exercise, and just wanting a loving home. Some rescue centre also pay vet bills for their 'seniors'. Unfortunately some charities won't rehome to people who are over 80, but some will. They might think about having an elderly dog. I know someone who adopted a 15 year old terrier cross. They had him for 18 months but he fitted right in to their lives and they felt they had given him a happy 'retirement'.
