It is the best decision Daisy, and I think that plan for the girls is a wise one xxx

Thank you all so much. They all took Midge out for a short walk today and he seemed to enjoy it, although very tired on the way home and then slept for several hours. I think DS2 has realised that they are making the best and kindest decision. He's still very upset, but they are concentrating on making it as easy as possible for Midge and the girls. I'm going over to take GD2 to playgroup on Monday morning, so I shall have to be brave as well.

GM - yes, but not quite sure what time. Obviously they don't want the girls to be there so they've said not before 9 am. I'm going over to take GD2 to playgroup so both DS and DIL can stay with Midge - the other gran will take GD1 to school, and then if necessary I'll take GD2 back to our house after playgroup.

Thank you all so much. I'm very touched and grateful for your kind words.
When I went to collect GD2 this morning I was able to have a last cuddle with Midge, and had to stop the eyes from leaking because of GD2.
When she got home she was looking everywhere for him and calling, and her Dad sat down with her and gently explained that Midge was very, very old and very ill and had gone to doggy heaven. GD1 wondered why her dad was home at 3.30, and then said 'and where's Midge?'. Dad explained and she cried. After a while, she stopped crying and said thoughtfully that he was probably happier now, which her Dad agreed with. Then she said it was really good timing, which quite surprised Mum and Dad. Apparently it was good timing because he was just starting to shed fur (moult) and his white fur showed up a lot on her dark green school uniform. So far, so good, although of course they may have questions later. Poor DS and DIL are in bits, and very, very sad.

Oma - thank you, they both appreciate all the kind words.
Gem - I think you're right, and I hope the girls can look back on the fun they had with Midge without tears because he's gone. I'm going to bring GD2 over here tomorrow - better than staying in the house at the moment.
