Our Italian Greyhound Indie had to be put to sleep this morning. He was very old, almost blind and had dementia. He had been coping quite well with lots of care and attention but this morning he deteriorated and couldn't walk and was clearly in pain. Our lovely vet came to the house and put him to sleep. He was a very sweet and gentle dog with never a sign of any aggression. The picture is of him when we first got him 17 years ago.

Aww. BizzyL I'm really so sorry to hear this. You must be heartbroken. Many of us pet lovers will really empathise with you. I had no idea dogs could get dementia. It sounds like you gave him lots of love. All they ask for really. Sending love.xx"Good friends help you to find important things when you have lost them....your smile, your hope, and your courage."

That's a long life for a greyhound BL. When the time comes you just know, don't you. Be glad for the unconditional love he gave and you returned.
He's in a happier pain free place now. XxWomen are like tea bags; you never know how strong they are until they are put in hot water.

BL - I'm so sad for you. What a wonderful friend he's been to you all these years - he will leave a big hole in your lives. I'm glad the vet was able to come to the house so Indie was in his own home with you besides him.
I must admit to shedding tears for what you will be going through, but I'm sure it's a comfort that when the time came you were able to act quickly so he didn't suffer. It's my big dread that I might not recognise when Clyde's time comes.

Thank you all so much for your kindness. At the moment it is very odd being without a pet at all having had so many over the years. I worked out that we have had dogs and cats for over thirty years without a break so you imagine how strange the new situation feels. DH is sorting everything out this morning as I couldn't face moving beds, bowls, food etc. yesterday. Daisy I think you will know the right moment knowing Clyde as well as you do and all his little ways. I hope it is a very long time before you have to decide though.Be careful when blindly following the Masses.
