Yesterday DD&SIL had storm out for a walk and he cried out,
He wouldn't put his back leg down,
So DD rang B to pick them up to take them home,

SIL had to lift him into the car,
DD bathed his paw and had a look but couldn't see anything ,
He couldn't weight bear on it ,
She said he was whimpering during the night and still wouldn't put his paw down.

She took him to the vet this morning he examined him etc ,
He has totally torn his cruciate ligament ,
He has to be operated on to repair it ,
There was a nother vet there who deals with these injuries and had a look at him to see if rest and physio could be used but by the x-ray it's torn completely,

He put him on strong pain killers and he's on house rest till some of the swelling goes down , till the 12th when they will do the operation.

He said it's probably age related rather than a injury,

Oh dear poor Storm, I hope the swelling goes down soon he is needing lots of comfort.

Not what you want to hear Oma . It’s awful when your pet is ill or in pain. I hope Storm has got some painkillers to make him feel more comfortable.
Ageing is not kind to us or animals!

He's getting very spoilt,
DD went and bought pet steps so he can safely get onto the sofa without climbing.

He's laying on the sofa like it's just for him 😁

He's on strong pain killers DD said he's a bit spaced out with them,
But if they keep him pain free it's worth it.

Oma, I'm so sorry to read about Storm's torn cruciate ligament. This is exactly what Eva has and our vets x-rayed her and said she needed surgery to fix it. We got a second opinion from a specialist orthopaedic vet who was recommended to us. The critical thing was that the specialist vet said the Menisci (soft pads at the knee, between the Femur and Tibia) weren't damaged. She also said that Eva had started to develop the muscles that would support the joint, and has given us loads of physio exercises for her.

She said it was most probably age related, like Storm, and the cruciate ligament can sort of tear, rather like a frayed rope.

She explained that there are two types of cruciate ligament repair. A TPLO involves cutting and rotating the bones and putting in a metal plate in to hold it in place. The other sounds less invasive - more like securing the joint with a strong elastic band. It seems that the muscles Eva has started to develop will do the same job as the other operation (TTA, I think). So we are very relieved that hopefully Eva won't need surgery.

Eva was sick and also had really horrible diarrhoea on the pain killers so we had to stop them. Has Storm got a date for his operation?

He goes in on the 12th Daisy ,
He has to have another x-ray a few days before to see if anything has improved but he doesn't expect it too,

DD would rather he didn't have to have surgery but he still can't put his foot down and it's very swollen at the moment.

Oma, has the vet suggested cold packs to try to reduce the swelling? We're using them after physio and Eva's little walk every day, and they do help reduce swelling and inflammation.
